I know all record deals vary. I do not want to know anyone else's finances. I was curious if it was more advantageous for a band to sell tickets or
sell albums?
Say a Madball probably gets a garauntee per night as does a SOIA and maybe a piece of the door. What about a lesser known band?
Can anyone elighten me here?
Thanks!
*EDIT* I also know this type of music is not about "making money". I understand that.

I would say if the CD is put out by a lable then the band makes more money playing shows. If the band put out the CD themselves then it might be
selling CDs rather than doing shows.
Either way I think that they probably make the most money on merch!

Merch huh? I hadn't even thought about that. I guess with licesnsing and what not?

Record deals really enable indie bands to sell cds and get shows. When you sell CD's at live shows you usually get most of the profit where as
through record stores you get a small cut after expenses. It is my experience that the cost of recording CD's usually needs to be recouped by playing
live shows.

wmosy bands a re lucky to see a dollar a cd....
most of the bands we work with are bringing in 4.00 a shirt at shows
and sell a whole lotta shirts

Being ina band, without a label currently, I'd say Merch. We sell 6 song CD samplers and shirts at shows. The CDs sell fairly quickly (for $1) and
shirts are hard if people don't know you. Buying a shirt is kind of an intimate thing. People buy shirts from bands they are familiar with. Play a
place a second time and you sell more shirts than you did the first.
Most venues suck at paying out unless the draw is extremely good.

i was gonna say, for most smaller bands it's...
- cds sold at shows
- merch sold at shows
- cds sold in stores / downloads
- THEN the door.
stateofdisgrace's point about why people buy a shirt is a good one. it's a rare occasion that i see a shirt SO dope for a band i don't know that i'd
wear it, let alone buy it.
oh, and by the way... state of disgrace sounds pretty great, so if you haven't checked them out, please do so.

if i really like a band that i dont know, especially smaller opening bands, i try to pick up something from their tabel, whether it be a cd they have
or a shirt cuz obviously its tough doing what they do so whats 10 bucks here and there to help a band out, but only if i like what i just heard
