between this new law regarding young working people and that bit with the muslims recently, there sure is a lot of unrest in this country.

Motorist Drives Through Crowd in Paris
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060407/ap_on_re_eu/france_job_p...

PARIS - A motorist drove through a crowd of students protesting the government's new youth jobs law Friday near the Sorbonne University, injuring seven people.

Furious demonstrators overturned the car and tried to kick its windows out, while police in riot gear and helmets worked to disperse the crowd.

The incident came after high school students spent the afternoon disrupting traffic outside the Sorbonne by picnicking on a busy boulevard. They were heading away when a frustrated motorist tried to burst through the crowd.

Several dozen youths turned the car over and unsuccessfully attempted to drag the driver out before police and onlookers intervened.

Firefighters said seven people suffered light injuries.

French students have been protesting for weeks over a new law that will make it easier for companies to hire and fire people under age 26. While most demonstrations have been peaceful, some have seen violence from a radical fringe.

There's the one car I see about a block away from my house that has a "BOYCOTT FRANCE" sticker in the window and american flags everywhere. I just have to laugh. It's kinda like the whole "freedom fries" thing. Just completely ridiculous.

If there ever happens to be another war where they look to the US to bail them out of trouble again, I will become a concientious objector and refuse to fight for the liberation of their country.

clevohardcore - 4-7-2006 at 11:12 PM

I like the wine. and a nice French roast coffee from STARBUCKS

moforn - 4-8-2006 at 07:07 AM

If you think the Fench from France are annoying, try shacking up with an Acadian.

On the original topic, this obviously seems to have alot more to do with an underlying anger than an objection to any one law/policy. It's hard to get decent coverage of the actual protests/riots but from what I can see they don't seem to be particulary focused against any target. The anger might be real and arguably legitimate but the powers that be will never feel the brunt of it, the disposessed will, look at Detroit 40 years later.
I also have to think that of all the countries in the world the French don't have all that much to riot in the streets about- it's not like their government is engaging in warrantless wiretapping of it's citizens, flagrantly violating the Geneva convention, holding people captive for years without the right to due process (habeus corpus, schmabeus corpus), drawing the condemnation of the united nations, kidnapping citizens of sovereign countries such as Canada and flying them to be tortured oversees, sending it's own soldiers into battle zones without the equipment to protect themselves and dropping the ball supporting soldiers and their families, exercising no accountability to the public or congress (magna carta, schmagna carta) and funneling billions of dollars into the pockets of their friends while bankrupting the country and destroying social services... citizens of a country like that have something to riot about.

Dave - 4-8-2006 at 07:35 AM

me & the girlfriend are going to Paris/Venice in 2.5 weeks, for vacation, if i see any riots i'll be sure to get some pic/video of it.

Maybe Im just missing something then. I dont really understand all the hate towards France. Is it because theyre arrogant? Yeah... well so are Americans. Just look at the "we're gonna have to bail your ass out of another war" comments. I know there was some backlash when the French said that they wouldnt support a US invasion of Iraq, but they werent the only country saying that, and anyway... look at the results. Maybe they were right that we shouldnt have gotten involved?

I dont really spend time dwelling upon France, so if someone could throw some info out there to enlighten me as to why I should hate them then maybe I'll be able to understand. Overall it doesnt really matter to me in the long run though.

DaveMoral - 4-8-2006 at 02:38 PM

DaveMoral - 4-8-2006 at 02:38 PM

serenity - 4-8-2006 at 07:17 PM

DAK - 4-9-2006 at 07:03 PM

A baguette can do a lot of damage in a pinch.

Apotre - 4-13-2006 at 02:34 AM

Nice topic...

I did not understand everything because I do not master all the subtleties of the American language, but "Fuck the French" and "Fuck the French... Indeed" i understood.

I don't know for what you blame us. If it is still because for the war in Iraq, it would to stop to put this on the French people. You believe that it is us who made this decision? No, it is Chirac and De Villepin.

You believe that De Villepin and Chirac did not want to make the war because of the peace? the sames guys who support the dictatorship in official ivory cost and who are incriminated in shady business? Stop Bullshit

I am going to say you the trues reasons:

1) 25 % of the French population is Muslim. Thus if we helped you, we would have riots and civil war. There is big tensions beetween Muslim and some French..., you think zacharias moussaoui is a isolated man? There is lot of extrem muslim in France...

2) Before the war in Irak, France had just obtained a contract to redo and modernize the Iraq's electricity network. Constructions estimated : 10 Milliard euros.
Thus when the war be annoncing, the government mobilized, officialy " because the war is bad ", but unofficially because we had economic interest (construction site, petrole).

So beliveve in me, when i say that French people didn't responsible of the government d?cisions.

upyerbum - 4-13-2006 at 07:10 AM

Maybe the French government should buy shares in Halliburton.
