I am in the 'United Auto Workers' union and I work in the shop at Masoneilan. Its a huge company that makes valves for pipelines, refineries, nasa, gas stations etc. I sit at a computer, do some paperwork, put workorder packages together, staple a bunch of stuff and I run a small engraving machine to engrage the serial numbers and other information for each valve onto small metal tags that they pin or tie to each valve before its shipped.

I work at a sign shop. We do all kinds of shit...aluminum street signs, window lettering, vehicle/truck lettering, business signs, real estate signs...you name it we make it (unless it's neon or wood-carved). The last biggest sign we made was on 20'w x 5'h lexan (which is basically indestructible plexiglas) for a light-box. We also do all kinds of banners and shit like that.

I am a field technician with Offshore Joint Serivices. I work on pipe lay barges applying Hight Density Polyurethane Foam around the weld. I protects the weld as it goes off of the back end of the barge and into the water. We set up and maintain an injection system for two chemicals that combine to make the foam. We train laborers to do the job and then we supervise. We are also responsible for all correspondense between our company, the client, and the contractor (dpr's, incident reports, time sheets, etc.). We are underpaid as fuck!

Jason the Magnificent - 4-16-2006 at 11:00 AM

I'm a union sheet metal worker...but about 8 years ago my hand got jacked up in a machine so they retrained me in the office. I do shop drawings on autocad of hvac ventilation and piping systems. I basically take the engineers cartoons and coordinate them with other trades to make installation drawings. Work mostly on hospitals it seems, but have done airports, theatres, schools, ice rinks and high rises.

BDx13 - 4-16-2006 at 11:14 AM

i do contract design and programming.

jason, i'm curious... which pays better, the actual metal work, or the autocad position?

Jason the Magnificent - 4-16-2006 at 12:42 PM

In Chicago sheet metal draftsmen have to be members of the union so I'm still getting scale. No other trade in the area has union draftsmen.

upyerbum - 4-16-2006 at 03:09 PM

I too am a draughtsman. Mainly industrial piping, some HVAC. Right now we're laying a pipeline in New Brunswick. We also do a lot of work in the pulp mills around the Maritimes down into Maine and New Hampshire.

I was thinking about what each of us make money wise. I didnt know if it was a personal question to ask or not. I am amazed and saddened to hear that you make that little money doing the amazing work you do!

defstarsteve - 4-17-2006 at 07:21 PM

meh it's no big deal
I do so much behind the scenes stuff that is just what it breaks down to
late nights doing art and web stuff

my bills are paid my family is fed
so what if I haven't touched my music in almost 2 years and never have time to skate

if we keep going at the rate we are we'll have an auto by the end of the year and my time printing will be cut to less then a quater of what it is now

I spent 5 hours printing on saturday
4 colors on 140 shirts
a little fewer then 30 shirts an hour
on an auto the same job would have taken about 30 minutes running slow....

anyone want to become a silent partner and invest soI can buy an auto and have a life

DaveMoral - 4-17-2006 at 09:04 PM

Tempting, for sure Steve...
