NYHC, NEW YORK HARDCORE? lets get technical here

ENDERA.x - 4-17-2006 at 09:57 AM

Lets look at it, yes, "NYHC" is: NYC - HC.

But bands that are from New York state, can still be called New York Hardcore.

What do you think?

I think, YES. Someone bitched about a flyer saying a band was "New York Hardcore" when they weren't from NYC they were from Grand Island.

Who cares.

I say who gives a shit btu I remember this was an issue back in the early 90's when SNAPCASE and EC were big. Along with SOULSTICE and others who were not so toughguy or whatever. I remeber this douchebag that was "VEGAN and wore a varsity straightedge jacket. He use dot put on shows and shit around AKRON OHIO. Serious douchebag but he did get some good bands to OHIO. Anyway he was having this "DEBATE" with other "vegans or non vegans" about was NYHC allover NY or was it just a style(branch) of hardcore? WHAT THE FUCK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2 cents. Just because your from NYC does not mean your NYHC, but reality sets in and its a good tag to have if your a band so others will jsut on the wagon and use it. You can't stop them so I guess JUST BECAUSE YOUR FROM NYC MEANS YOU ARE NYHC. I don't think so but whatever.

Wasn't Hazen ST considered hardcore and only like Toby and Freddy were from NYC?

I think that the HC is more debatable than the NY when talking about Hazen Street.

On the subject, who fucking cares? I hate all this genre bullshit that people get into. The SMART people know what 'hardcore' is and it doesnt matter what city or state it comes from. Its like differant dialects of the english language. Its all english wether its in Georgia, Mass, Cali or Texas.

right on, the main paramater is
HC ....and NY is Ok for the whole state.... but that is just a meaningless technicall issue
s cause what do you do if some members are from Hoboken in NJ and some from Queens.
If you are f* stupidly narrowminded then even YOT wasnt a NYHC band cause most of then were living outside nYC.

clevohardcore - 4-17-2006 at 11:59 AM

Hardcore is hardcore. If its from CLEVELAND, NYC, LONG ISLAND, DETROIT, LA, or St PAul Minnesota.

clevohardcore - 4-17-2006 at 11:59 AM

NYHC is simply NYHC.

In the book American Hardcore I remember Roger Miret saying something about this. He said he thought it was stupid that bands like YOT and Bold got called NYHC because they weren't from NY, they were from Connecticut.

Somewhat valid seeing as it's a different state.

Growing up and seeing NYHC on flyers and shirts meant the direct link to madball, agnostic front etc etc becuase thats where they're from ... but now it's more of a music style ... a band can be from japan and play 'NYHC-style hardcore' and everyone will know 'oh shit, they must sound like madball'.

I guess it's like a band from virginia beach playing 'west coast thrash' or a band from texas playing 'clevo metal' ... as stupid as it really sounds it's an easy way to give people a fairly accurate idea of what your band sounds like.

But as for band putting NYHC on their shirts and claiming it's their location when it's not .... bite a dick i spose.

DEFINITLY TRUE! I saw bands in Europe with NYHC painted on amps and it was used to describe some of the bands.

Anyone else remember when Anthrax used NYHC on a graphic? I heard stories back then that lots of people were really pissed at them.

forsaken - 4-17-2006 at 08:46 PM

someone told me a member of biohazard or anthrax tried to register and trademark the nyXhc logo thing (the X with a letter each side + top and bottom) ... thats pretty funny.

DaveMoral - 4-17-2006 at 09:05 PM

I saw that logo on the Anthrax website... it was probably them.

clevohardcore - 4-17-2006 at 09:12 PM
