A question about Atreau & all those other 'bands'

XHonusWagnerX - 5-30-2006 at 03:30 PM

Who is the main audience of these bands? Young kids that are to stupid to find real hardcore bands? Fashion core kids that see the shirts at the mall and figure they have to like it? Older metal guy that just think they are new metal bands? Do any of what I would consider 'actual hardcore kids' like these bands?

I just dont get it at all! I know some people that have musical opinions that I respect that suddenly made some younger 'emo type' friends and now they like this stuff. What gives!?!?

Spoiler - 5-30-2006 at 04:53 PM

I have a 16 year old brother who loves this shit,as a matter of fact,he plays in a band of this style. All this stuff is new to him,Atreyu to him,is like metallica was to me at his age....I always set him straight when he calls his band "Hardcore" though...one day he'll see the light....but shit man,let the kids have their fun...god know I had mine.Back in the late 80's,if I could pick up a Sheer Terror shirt in the mall...I would have done it in a minute (instead of waiting 2 months for L&F records to mail me my shit)...and I would have liked to have been able to of seen Slapshot on Mtv2....but we had none of these luxeries (and I'm now glad we didn't).The scene changes year after year...and mostly for the worse in our eyes...and it always will.I'd love to see my little brother playing some youth crew old school hardcore stuff...but that just aint gonna happen,he'd rather play what he plays...god bless him...if it makes him happy...so be it...to each his own.I don't understand the hairstyle, the dancing, the girl pants or the huge belt buckles...But I'm old and I really don't give a fuck anymore....I don't want it,they can have it,I got a new name for you it's A T R E Y U

It's what's deemed as "popular." I don't really care except that it gets called punk or hardcore or emo when it's not. As long as they don't mislabel it, kids can have it. It's when people who love fall out boy and simple plan tell me they are punk fans when they clearly have no clue what it is.

So then Atreau is basicly POP Music (Pop = Popular Music)

crazyfists28 - 5-30-2006 at 05:34 PM

i think were all getting older and were becoming "those guys" asking "what happened to what we used to love?" its bound to happen eventually, im going back in time and listening to anything before the nineties at this point, i've gone back to the yardbirds, ramones , the kinks just to get a perspective on music and production to hear when it was really pure....

JawnDiablo - 5-30-2006 at 05:35 PM

isnt atreu the thing in the never ending story?

clevohardcore - 5-30-2006 at 05:36 PM

Blame AFI for the makeup. Blame Candiria and Converge for the nerdcore in the hardcore scene. Blame Tool for inventing nerdmetal. then you get metalcore. O and blame Pantera for being good at making metal and I don't want to say hardcore but making really good metal at least for the records Vulgar display and far beyond driven.

XHonusWagnerX - 5-30-2006 at 05:37 PM

Im mainly asking because a friend whos favorite bands have always been... THE CURE, THE MISFITS, SLAPSHOT, MINERAL, KOOL KEITH, DEFTONES and some stuff like some Korn, Slipknot etc.... well anyway, shes suddenly singing the praises of Silverstein, Atreau and all that other bullshit! I hate to see people that KNOW about 'the good stuff' fall into that pit of crap!

i hate being that guy.i feel like my dad sometimes saying those damn kids...getting old and grumpy i guess.

DaveMoral - 5-30-2006 at 05:53 PM

Atreyu and the like are all basically to hardcore what glam "metal" was to the metal scene back in the 80s. It's all re-hashed At The Gates riffs and Hatebreed mosh riffs and bad haircuts and eyeliner. It will, without a doubt, die off real quick. Particularly when they all become cookie cutter types, it's happening now... the waning days have begun.

BDx13 - 5-30-2006 at 06:38 PM

^ couldn't have said it better.

the only part that bothers me is when people call those bands hardcore.

joemaconmovies - 5-30-2006 at 07:08 PM

good job describing it dave.

and josh, i guess it is pop in a way although i hesitate to call it pop. i guess it's just mainstream right now and like dave said, you gotta kinda ride it out. these bands will fall off the map and people will forget about them. i don't understand that person changing tastes like that but...i guess it happens. there used to be a girl who was into EARLY dkm and ducky boys and :30 over tokyo and then a few years later she was into really shitty popular music. it just happens.

MyOwnWay - 5-30-2006 at 07:09 PM

I like Atreyu for the most part. Their first Victory is great. Its has a well written metal with some real good harmonies. I bought their second and only liked about two songs. Havnt picked up the newest one.

But as for kids overall, I think they get the toughness of metal but with the catchy hooks for the appeal.

crazyfists28 - 5-30-2006 at 07:15 PM

there were alot of cool solos and whatnot on the first, i agree, but they just got too big for their own good

I agree with that. Second one pretty much sucked.

exactly the shit is the modern version of glam metal. i gotta admit though i never liked either genre but it if had to listen to old glam or new i would take poison or great white over any of that dark eyeliner 3rd rate at the gates meets hatebreed and new found glory garbage. how the fuck can that shit be even remotely construed as hardcore. Maybe kids have gotten more stupid or just lazier. One step forward two steps back!

No doubt. River Runs Red is a solid album. It gets fairly regular rotation to this day.

joemaconmovies - 5-30-2006 at 11:04 PM

i might get killed for this but i'm a green day fan and i love the look billie joe has with the eyeliner. i don't mind the eyeliner so much cause it looks cool.

Gays?

that's a little harsh. gay people have better taste then that.

upyerbum - 5-31-2006 at 07:31 AM

I know some "metalheads" who actually refer to "emo" and "new hardcore" as Progressive metal. It all sounds the same to me really.

I think it all stems from that scene in another state of mind when Ness was putting his eyeliner on and describing the reasoning behind it. It's all about the chicks, they dig it.

joemaconmovies - 5-31-2006 at 11:39 AM

i think the way billie joe from green day wears it makes it look cool. i've never seen ness with it on. i know billie joe didn't create the look, just that i don't mind it because he doesn't look like a douche when he does it.

Lets just say Mike ness should own stock in his eyeliners company, the dude wears it constantly. My wife says he looks like a washed up drag queen these days and she still loves him. Now thats pretty damn good if someone can describe you that way and in the same sentence mention how attractive you still are. Dude is short as hell too.

3 guys who surprised me with their actual height

Mike ness
Roger Miret
Evan Seinfeld

all real short, not expected from any.

DaveMoral - 5-31-2006 at 10:35 PM

Dude, how shameless a perv is Evan Seinfeld???? Every broad that shows her face on Supergroup, who isn't even remotely the type, the dude is trying to get into doing porn or posing for Penthouse or something like that. It's already old with only 2 episodes... damn. And he's just a short fat bald dude at this point...

I don't mind Green Day, honestly, that's not the shit that bothers me at all. The strange thing about New Found Glory is that some of those dudes were in an old straight edge hardcore band from Florida called Tension, and one of the guys from Vietnom was in that band too. Weird shit that dudes ended up doing, mainly to make a buck. I have to admit though, NFG has some videos that crack me up... especially the one that Troma produced.

clevohardcore - 5-31-2006 at 11:10 PM

Ya Evan is a snake. In 1996 after a show at a small club they were getting off stage and I was chatting with that Rob dude they had play guitar from helmet and this chick screamed "get the hell off me" Evan bent down from the stage that was waist high and grabbed her tits. He was saying something like "fuck you then bitch" Some people laughed but for some reason it bothered the piss out of me. She was tiny too. I don't igve a shit who you are don't force yourself on a woman.

DaveMoral - 6-1-2006 at 06:25 PM

Yeah, he's nothing but a tattooed bald version of Ron Jeremy at this point. I'm sure he'll end up getting his teeth kicked in for shit like that eventually... if he hasn't already.

clevohardcore - 6-4-2006 at 02:16 AM

DaveMoral - 6-4-2006 at 09:18 AM
