To all the designers here...

Are you registered as a business? Do you HAVE TO register as a business to be "legal"? I have heard there is some leway with being a "freelance designer". I just want to know what I would need to do to be legal basically (if anyone has went thru it) so I can start advertising for real in publications and not just messageboards.

Anyone?

Email Jeremy. Hes does designs & webwork and he does it legal and pays taxes and all that stuff. He should be able to answer anything you wanna know. I can give you his phone # if you rather call so you can actually ask him stuff.

as far as being legit, i think you need to regester your tradename. I did. It only cost me $40. That was the easy part. Writting a business plan/marketing plan kind of sucks.

you can do that stuff, but you don't have to. all depends on how you want to market yourself and what your state laws require.

companies hire me by my personal name (no business name), pay my fee (witholding no taxes), i pay estimated quarterly taxes, then at the end of the year, i just tally up what i brought in and what i spent, and send off the tax forms to uncle sam.

Yeah, someone else I talked to (a guy me and Honus know) and he basically does the same thing.

Thanks for the input from all of you. I am clueless with the business end.
