Google buys Youtube

Anyone have any thoughts? I think its weird that they paid as much as they did ($1.65 Billion) since Youtube is really just like software so people can post videos and in most cases the people dont even own the videos they are posting. Seems like there could be lots of law suits against youtube/google now that its a company with cash behind it.

Google is gobbling up YouTube in a deal that will give the search giant a much stronger connection to online video and music content.

Under terms of the $1.65 billion stock deal, YouTube will remain independent, although there is talk among analysts that Google will integrate some of YouTube's applications and services into its search capabilities.

While most of the clips on YouTube are submitted by amateurs seeking their 15 minutes of fame, YouTube also offers content from major media outlets and just this week inked agreements with CBS, Universal Music Group, and Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

Media Move
"Google needs to establish relationships with online media companies, and YouTube can deliver that along with a huge audience that appeals to advertisers," said Andrew Frank, a research director at Gartner. "YouTube has established itself as the frontrunner for consumer-generated media, and people are flocking to the site because it is the place to find and share video."

Indeed, YouTube, which debuted in November 2005, is widely hailed as the first company to truly understand the popularity of video sharing and make it easy for anyone to get in on the act.

Yankee Group analyst Jennifer Simpson said that social-networking sites like YouTube offer a dynamic that is significantly different from conventional Web sites. "We are at a point where social networking is drawing a wide audience, and we may not see another site with the wide appeal of YouTube," she said.

Integrated Tech?
Simpson also noted that, as a result of the acquisition, Google will now have another outlet through which it can market its services. In fact, she went on to say, Google could use its technological prowess to give YouTube users the ability to talk in real time about the videos they are watching.

She also said that it is possible that "Google could push video feeds into a content reader and increase the exposure of its mapping, e-mail, and other applications." YouTube's media channels, and its ability to tag and collect clips, might be attractive to Google as well, Simpson said.

"[YouTube has] created new ways to manage and store vast amounts of content, which isn't easy, and they are among the social-networking sites that are taking new approaches to advertising, such as using clips submitted by companies," she said. "It will be interesting to see how Google integrates its applications with the YouTube site."

WWE is a heavy hitter when it comes to their stuff. Most WWE related videos are gone within the first couple of hours of being posted on youtube. They'll sue anybody who fucks with their copyrighted material.

some media companies have threatened to to sue youtube in tha past for copyright violations, but agreements have always been reached. now that there are some actual assets to go after (ie, google's pile of cash), it will be interesting to see how that argument shakes out.

Good for the You Tube guys. I have respect for anyone that starts a biz and is able to cash in like that.
