Has merch gotten stupid?

Discipline - 10-12-2006 at 08:42 PM

I posted this on the SGR board and thought I'd post it here too.

Some bands seem willing to put their name/logo an anything these days. On cafepress or whatever it's called I saw Neglect merch on there that included a fuckin TEDDY BEAR!!!!! Who the hell wants a Neglect teddy bear. I was on the DKM site and noticed they now have golf balls with their name on them. The Misfits have bobbleheads, lunch boxes, and air fresheners, as well as anything else they can put a Crimson Ghost on. When is it going to be enough. What happened to shirts, stickers and 1" buttons? Is it greed or is there actually a demand for some of this crap.

I will admit that I bought my neice a Misfits lunchbox and Misfits sleepers for my nephew.

It's The American way Disc, find something that makes money and saturate the shit out of the market with it. We americans LOVE our bobbles and do dads;)

I wont talk about the stupid things kids ask me to print

Just because every band in hot topic has 12 color printed undies, what makes you think your shitty little local band need them

You dont have to pay for any of that cafe press shit...so its not like your printing up teddy bears in hope someone will buy one. You upload art and apply it to whatever you want...its free, so why not.

Indeed, they even have doggie shirts. Fucking hell.

I have the Crimson ghost bobblehead. But I collect some bobbleheads. Here's a few I have.

yeah, the cafe press stuff is all templated. you upload your logo, then pick ANY piece of merch they have available, and they show previews of it ni your store.

generally, i like a wide variety of merch, but yea, some fo this shit has gone too far. i like the getting a hold of more obscure advertising materials. somewhere around here i have a misfits "walk among us" trick or treat bag.

My favorite odd piece of merch (that I lost) was a basic black comb with "The Ducky Boys" on it. I think they had those back in 1997 or so.

DaveMoral - 10-13-2006 at 07:16 PM

Sometimes oddball merch makes me laugh, but other times it's rediculous. The first band I ever saw had thongs out there was Cradle of Filth... and that seemed appropriate. When I see hardcore or metalcore outfits with shit like that it just pisses me off.

Baseball caps suck too, the only ones that were ever cool was the old Suicidal caps... those ruled.

I just wonder what hardcore band will be the first to have their own line of condoms or something equally retarded.

upyerbum - 10-13-2006 at 07:34 PM

Like you said, some oddball BAND APPROPRIATE merch can be fun, but there is a line.

On a side note, you gotta' bit of theme goin with the bobbleheads DAK, very nice.

I can't really fault KISS or the Misfits though cuz there whole persona's as bands are basically a perverse parody of Americana. I just laugh.

Before my old band went south we were actually considering "Property of the Plundering Sons" titty tops, but that was more to be jerks than anything else.
