Popcorn

Would popcorn be conisdered a vegetable?

moron - 2-4-2005 at 08:57 PM

Ive got some interesting insight into this. I had to be put on a special diet about 10 years ago because I had chronic kidney failure. So I couldnt eat foods high in potassium or phosphorus and I couldnt have lots of protien. Anyway... I couldnt eat corn because it was high in potassium, but I could eat popcorn because it didnt have much.

So... there's something in the popping that takes lots of nutrients out.

I dont know if you were looking for a serious answer, but there ya go. I dont think it's a vegetable.

As a diabetic, when deciding on what I'm eating I have to count corn as a starch as opposed to a vegetable.

i've had this discussion way too many times

all i know is i love it

GabeTexasGAMC - 2-9-2005 at 05:23 AM

the chemical reation when the kernals are heated makes the starch expand and explode hence the soft inside turing out and it becoming popcorn.

not a vegetable.
i think its under the new snackfood catagory now.

I have no idea. I thought it was chips or snacks or something. But it is from corn.

definately a vegetable. saying it isn't is like saying applesauce isn't fruit.

Still we have no definite answer. I'm loving the old threads though. Seeing my posts and wondering WTF I was doing when I posted them. Its kind of really fucking cool.

Popcorn's a vegetable... I think, however, that the difference between corn and popcorn lay primarily in that popcorn is of a different variety than sweet corn AND the popping.

It's still a vegetable though. The applesauce analogy is right on.

yeah thats definitly true. I was mainly being sarcastic, but I wonder if there is any processing to corn besides the drying to make it pop.

Dave - 2-8-2009 at 09:42 PM
