Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

How do you store your records?

BDx13 - 12-4-2006 at 05:34 PM

for the first time in years, i actually have the majority of my vinyl back in my possession, but i need a more protective and accessible storage solution than a couple of stacked boxes.

JUICE MAYNE MSHC - 12-4-2006 at 05:54 PM

on my ipod. fuck records.

upyerbum - 12-4-2006 at 05:56 PM

Milk Crates, not fancy but it does the trick.

Gooch - 12-4-2006 at 06:00 PM

Milk crates for Lps, cardboard boxes for 7"s. I got the boxes from a record store years ago, exact size for 7"s. Plus they come with lids.
This reminds me, I need to pick up another milk crate.

I wish they had Milk Crates that were tall enough that the vinyl didnt stick out so you could fill and stack them.

My LPs are mostly in old style wooden crates, but they are beat bad! Others are just leaning against the wall.

moron - 12-4-2006 at 06:10 PM

Boxes for my 7"s, and I have a shelf in a bookcase that has my LPs. It's starting to get full though.

Dave - 12-4-2006 at 06:16 PM

all of mine are kept on a shelves.

side note for 7" storage boxes, goto your local comic book shop, and get a comic box, they are the exact width for a 7" record, and they come with lids.

BDx13 - 12-4-2006 at 06:47 PM

those of you using shelves... how wide are they or are they just super sturdy? I'd like to go with shelves, but weight is an issue.

comic book boxes is a good idea, but i kinda like the old metal 45 cases from back in the day.

crazyfists28 - 12-4-2006 at 06:48 PM

i saw a few different shelving systems on amazon but they only hold about 100. kinda nice cuz you can put the record player on top of it, sort of a showcase for your records

Dave - 12-4-2006 at 07:00 PM

one on the left is what i used to use worked well, as long as you put some "L" brackets for reinforment, now its used for CD storage. think it is about 14" deep.

and i have two of the units on the right that i store my records and stereo gear in now.

newbreedbrian - 12-4-2006 at 07:00 PM

LP's

7"s

newbreedbrian - 12-4-2006 at 07:02 PM

i just modified a book shelf with extra L brackets for the extra weight. holds up fine

BDx13 - 12-4-2006 at 07:44 PM

i dunno brian, those boards look like they're bowing... may be time to flip 'em! adding extra L shaped brackets for support is a good idea, though.

a buddy of mine got a huge, wall-sized shelf made out of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood for his records. not only is it solid wood, but it's essentially designed like a bunch of 14" cubes, so no lone length is very long, and it's super supportive.

it's not like i have THAT many records, but vertical storage is imperative in my book.

BDx13 - 12-4-2006 at 07:49 PM

as a side note, those DJ boxes you see at the bottom of my pile are rugged as SHIT! i've checked them as baggage on a few flights and the records have made it through 100% safe and sound. they're not cheap, but they are TOUGH.

i sold off most of my records
or gave them to people on here out of the kindness of my black heart
but for the most part, they were stored similar to duanes set up

Jason the Magnificent - 12-5-2006 at 07:50 AM

Duane if theres an Ikea near you they have great shelves that are big enough for records and a rouge elephant couldnt bow.

yeah, most of that bowing happened before i re-enforced it. it's been holding steady since then. worst case scenario, i get some new boards in a few years. no biggie

Dave - 12-5-2006 at 03:50 PM

hey bri, if you get new boards get solid wood ones, they wont bow as much and can take more weight.

Siczine.com - 12-5-2006 at 06:51 PM

An empty 12 pack box of with a 1/4 of the top cut off.

clevohardcore - 12-6-2006 at 12:09 PM

In a basement that floods. Now they are in a landfill I guess.

DaveMoral - 12-6-2006 at 07:10 PM

Mine are in a milk crate... the few I have. The rest is on CD... did I mention that jewel cases are the bane of my existence?

The resulting rarity of SAE sized milk crates is my only real gripe with the metric system (metric crates don't fit 12"s)

so true..........I just stored 2 huge boxes of these in my attic yesterday, ugh!

problem solved

BDx13 - 1-4-2007 at 07:22 PM

i liberated this metal shelf from my garage. the surface is powder coated and is a little rough, so i threw down some cardboard on the shelves so the jackets don't get all torn up.

BDx13 - 1-4-2007 at 07:24 PM

and i know you're loving that 'pluto sings the hits' cd sitting on the floor!
fortunately, my kid is not a fan of that cd.

Siczine.com - 1-4-2007 at 07:28 PM

That CD shelf is nice. How many CD's does that hold?

BDx13 - 1-4-2007 at 07:39 PM

its the Benno CD Tower from Ikea, $40 each. They hold 180 CDs. I like 'em cause of their small footprint, the fact that they're modular, and that since it's ikea, they'll probably always be available.

Siczine.com - 1-4-2007 at 07:41 PM

I'll be looking into one of those. What are they about 5-6ft high?

JawnDiablo - 1-4-2007 at 08:00 PM

i too will be looking into a similar purchase as i will be moving to a new place soon and will need to conserve space...i have 800+ discs though

Siczine.com - 1-4-2007 at 08:05 PM

You should look into one of three tiered floating wall shelfs, they hold 750-900 easily.

BDx13 - 1-4-2007 at 08:16 PM

about six and a half.

Siczine.com - 1-4-2007 at 08:19 PM

I like the broad selection of colors.

JawnDiablo - 1-4-2007 at 08:41 PM

yeah i like this too. im bookmarking it

upyerbum - 1-4-2007 at 08:48 PM

Did you move the shelves or were they just conveniently perfect?

on the metal shelf with the records? they're all fixed at 13" high and about 14" deep.

of course now all the things that were on that shelf while it was in the garage are now sitting on my work bench, rendering it next to useless. but, a similarly sized plastic shelf can be had at the home depot for like $20, so that's ok.

upyerbum - 1-5-2007 at 06:42 AM

It almost looks like it was made for LP's.

JawnDiablo - 1-5-2007 at 11:44 PM

Spoiler - 1-7-2007 at 08:42 PM
