JAWN

JawnDiablo - 1-24-2007 at 06:43 AM

I fuckin hate this word
I hate when I hear people use it repeatedly
I hate it even worse when I hear white dudes abusing the word.
What the fuck
Isn't it time for a new one?

beaner - 1-24-2007 at 06:45 AM

i dunno wtf it means. enlighten me

BDx13 - 1-24-2007 at 07:45 AM

it's street drawl for "joint".
as in "a Spike Lee joint", not the kind you smoke.
and you know the way people from the south are said to speak with a "southern drawl," kinda drawling out the sound of certain letters or sounds? like that except street.

"i seen dat movie, dat shit's da jawn!"

also kind of like, "ya herd?!" or "i ain't skerd!" or my favorite, "stronge" (pronounced stron-jay) for strong.

XHonusWagnerX - 1-24-2007 at 09:47 AM

Wow... Ive never heard that....

Whats BAPE?

JUICE MAYNE MSHC - 1-24-2007 at 10:53 AM

Jawn is a Philly thing. All the dudes I know from Philly say that. The Southern version is "junt", which I don't say.

BDx13 - 1-24-2007 at 11:53 AM

you might be right about that, juice...now that i think of it, i can't recall hearing it much in new york.

gavin - 1-24-2007 at 12:16 PM

Never heard that word. I dont really hang around people who speak slang though.

On New Years Eve I was trashed and went to call someone a douchebag and slurred so it came out "GOOSHbag". And so a new word was born that night. Maybe it'll catch on and I can be in a rap video.

I speak damn good English but when you go to public schools your whole life in philly, hang out with philly people all day long it catches on. I say jawn like crazy, opps oh well. But that doesn't mean I can't speak properly or write well.

JUICE MAYNE MSHC - 1-24-2007 at 07:37 PM

the dudes I know in Philly all speak fine and they all say jawn. I never said it makes you sound stupid...other people brought that up.

Siczine.com - 1-24-2007 at 07:41 PM

haha my fault I shouldn't have quoted you, I just used to highlight that, like you said, jawn is a philly slang. Sorry about that.

Siczine.com - 1-24-2007 at 08:10 PM

Another Philly favorite that I like to use while engaging in informal conversation; yahmean and nahmean

defstarsteve - 1-24-2007 at 09:37 PM

these were all popular in dc when I went t oschool over there
but never heard a white guy say it back then....
we should all just learn klingon

clevohardcore - 1-24-2007 at 09:40 PM

I'm so out of the loop. I still think "Awsome" and "Totally Rad" are annoying. I may ahve to start appreciating "awsome" after what I am reading in this thread. It makes "Awsome" normal

defstarsteve - 1-24-2007 at 09:42 PM

hey I say both aweomse and rad on an hourly basis
being I was a skate kid from l.a. in the 80's you leave my slang along and stick to the ebonics bashing

HAHAHHAHAHAHA YAHMEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard that a lot too.

upyerbum - 1-24-2007 at 09:58 PM

You never really notice your own local dialect until you go elsewhere.
And everyone is looking at you lthinking "What the fuck did he just say?".

Siczine.com - 1-24-2007 at 11:01 PM

Man it's funny, I'll be talking to someone from out of state of I'll throw in some yahmeans and jawns and then throw in some really fancy, proper words and they'll be like did you just say that. ie. "Those mother fuckers are living vicariously through their boys, yahmean?"

hahaha too true. even here, you can go ten miles down the road and the accent will be totally differant.

i moved to the town im living in now because thats where the wife is from and i just love taking the piss outta the accent here. they prenounce four as fower and door as dower, sore as sower etc etc..
