TULSA, Oklahoma (AP) -- A man who escaped from prison, went on a crime spree, and was recaptured, has hanged himself in his cell, sheriff's officials said.

Troy Ellison, 23, apparently had a suicide pact with Charles McDaniels, 35, officials said. The two escaped from a medium-security prison Monday and were caught Wednesday.

Ellison was found hanging from a bed sheet tied to a light fixture at 8:35 a.m., 20 minutes after a routine check of his cell, the Tulsa County sheriff's office said.

Ellison and McDaniels discussed their plans to kill themselves in letters found in their cells, Undersheriff Brian Edwards said.

McDaniels was immediately placed on a suicide watch. Because Ellison did not seem despondent, he was not treated similarly.

"We were very surprised when we uncovered this plot between the two of them," Edwards said. "If a person is very determined, it is very difficult to keep them from hurting themselves."

Sheriff's Capt. John Bowman said Ellison managed to secure a thin section of sheet behind a light fixture that had appeared to be tied to the wall.

The escape
Authorities said Ellison and McDaniels cut through a fence Monday to escape from Great Plains Correctional Center, a medium-security private prison in Hinton.

The pair broke into a Hinton home, abducted a woman and drove her in her vehicle to Oklahoma City, about 50 miles east.

Then the men broke into another home, beat a woman who lived there and stole her car, leaving both women tied up. (Read full story)

McDaniels, a convicted murderer, and Ellison, serving time for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and escape, were captured Wednesday in a central Tulsa neighborhood. (Read full story).

The men led authorities on a short car chase after investigators closed in on the home where they were hiding. The duo was arrested after crashing their car and attempted to run. No one was injured.

Three Tulsa County inmates have committed suicide, all by hanging, in the 18 months since the county took over operations of the jail from a private company.

Having worke din a jail before they have a suicide watch nearly every 20 mintues. Its almsot as if they are more concerened with the criminals life more than any victim.

I say if you notice a criminal attempting suicide then its time for a lunchbreak. Be back in a half hour.

^^^^^ that would do it.

I'm not sayin petty criminals deserve to die, but the more hardened worthless bastards who prey on those weaker than themselves.............oh yeah, fuck em in the eye. I love the whole Texas speed line design for their capitol punishment program, more states need to adopt that shit and put some much needed balls back into the justice system. If there was an actual threat to criminals, you would see less crime, and the ones who do it anyway would be weeded out and dealt with firmly.

I couldn't agree more, but there are many "criminals" who are merely victims of bad circumstance. Locking people up should not be the first reaction, except in cases of the worthless bastards you speak of.

Educate
Humiliate
Incarcerate
Incinerate

in that order.
