Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

The Chinese dude on Miami Ink

JUICE MAYNE MSHC - 2-21-2007 at 12:39 AM

I fuckin hate this guy. He can't even fuckin draw and he's got a tattoo apprenticeship. Besides I can't understand what the fuck he is saying. I know the "scratcher vs real artist" debate has been done here before. But goddamn that dude sucks.

Kid Ugly - 2-21-2007 at 12:40 AM

Did he used to work at Big Dogz Ink?

clevohardcore - 2-21-2007 at 12:46 AM

I heard ROGER MIRET is producing his bands first cd soon. The band was awful on the show.

gavin - 2-21-2007 at 02:11 AM

besides garver he is the only dude i can stand on that show
ami is a total jerk off on the show and in real life
the other dudes are whatever

Jason the Magnificent - 2-21-2007 at 05:04 AM

Yeah its really disturbing how they're always teaching him to "draw"...the best part is it's teaching millions more people you dont need to be an artist, just a lackey for a while to be a tattooist.

JawnDiablo - 2-21-2007 at 06:56 AM

that show is just too dramatic for my taste
yeah i know i know....its supposed to be...all that kinda production is hard for me to swallow

Dave - 2-21-2007 at 07:25 AM

garver and darren brass are my favorites on the show, oh yeah Kat too, that girl can tattoo.

Voodoobillyman - 2-21-2007 at 09:32 AM

Yoji is Japanese, not Chinese. The only reason I point this out is because I have Japanese friends, and the worst thing you can do is call them Chinese. I think he is an artist, he has displayed some talent, just not able to do the "standard" tattoo design stuff that they want him to. It's all very formulaic. it is true that roger Miret is producing his bands first album and is actually going to be on a future episode of this show when he comes to do it, I'm really looking foward to this and hope he brings his 32 with him, since they're all car guys. As far as REAL talent, Garver keeps the tattoo aspect of that show interesting. I don;t bend over backwards to catch this show, but when it's on and I'm flipping, I'll watch it for a bit and am usually not dissapointed.

Weren't they making this guy practice drawing flowers or somthing a while back? I'm sorry IMO if you have to practice drawing remedial elements of tattoo compostions (or just basic drawing 101) before you can graduate from apprentice to artist, you're not an artist to begin with.

Everytime they've showed one of his peices on the show I've been mortified and I'm FAR from a tattoo snob...you should see some of the junk I've got.

gavin - 2-21-2007 at 12:30 PM

ill say this for the 1000th time
90% of the people getting tattoos in shops are not doing large "artistic" pieces
it CAN be a learned skill to tattoo the average tattoo that most people get

Thats been my experience too. Very few tattooists operate at the level of all custom all the time.

BKT - 2-21-2007 at 01:25 PM

I love that show and watch it all the time and that is all I have to say about that.

MM.

you're right
very very few

i have worked in a shop for 2 years now
the owner of my shop owns 5 shops all toghther and has been in the business all his life as his father is a pretty famous tattooist

i am around many people who tattoo
while many of them have the skill to tattoo anything anyone would want, its just not the case as most people who are coming in to get tattooed are not heavily tattooed and want small causual type things
not the large custom stuff that is seen on tv or that you or your friends may be getting

also, if anyone thinks miami ink is anything close to the workings of a real shop, you are mistaken
i watch the show here and there when i catch it but it is HEAVILY edited and they dont take one person off the street
not one
at this point you need to apply to get a tattoo there

Voodoobillyman - 2-21-2007 at 02:08 PM

I heard the shop is run for the show only, when they aren't filming all the artists are tattooing elsewhere.

garver owns a shop in L.A. that kat works at with him
the other people i have no idea what they do

BDx13 - 2-21-2007 at 03:16 PM

yeah, you've gotta be a pretty big name to be doing custom work exclusively.
or a part-timer!

Not necessarily...the 2 guys that tattoo me only do custom work by appointment only, no flash at all, and no one outside of Memphis has ever heard of them.

one of the girls who i get tattooed by does custom exclusively
it really depends on the type of shop one works at
"street shops" are at least 80% walk ins and small, "easy" stuff

anyway, back to my point, it is a craft that can be leqarned
ive seen it happen
period

crazyfists28 - 2-21-2007 at 03:50 PM

kat is soooo fine, and she does amazing portraits

JawnDiablo - 2-21-2007 at 04:03 PM

gavin - 2-21-2007 at 04:24 PM

dig
lemme know

Muttley - 2-21-2007 at 11:23 PM

Darren is cool, he used to work in Queens at Fat Cat Tattoos. He owns a shop now in Waterbury CT with Sean from Hatebreed.

Ami seemed cool the time we were in the shop, don't recall who else was there.

upyerbum - 2-22-2007 at 09:45 AM

I have to seriously question how that dude got where he is. Roger Miret is producing his album? Come on, there has got to be some up and comers that could use his support more than this dude. Maybe they're just friends, I don't know, but it mystifies me.

JawnDiablo - 2-22-2007 at 10:04 AM

in response to MBVs statement earlier
he's right on that.
somehow 6 dudes i grew up with are tattoo artists for a living.
only 2 of these guys are good for real awesome custom freehand "artwork".
the other guys are above average in handling the walk in stuff of people picking something from a book or off a pic they bring in. from hanging out in a shop for years as a youngster id say 85% of the money was from walk ins gettin stuff from the wall.
heres a pic of some bad tattoo i got on my forearm when i was like 20. it was from a Guy Atchinson flash sheet, and not totally bad but not something i like showing off these days. its 12 years old, id like to work it into some other stuff and complete the lower portion of the sleeve. yeah..its the fuckin thing from aliens....any ideas guys?
