Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

When you're telling me I owe you almost $5,000 in 3 weeks

Kid Ugly - 3-8-2007 at 12:26 PM

or you'll send it to a collection agency, PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE IN THE OFFICE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT WHO CAN SPEAK ENGLISH WITHOUT THE HEAVIEST FUCKING ACCENT I'VE EVER HEARD.

Here's my story...I attended Montclair State University Fall '05. Signed up for classes for Spring '06, and the loan went through. Then, I withdrew/dropped and received almost $5k from the college. So, I deposited the checks, and used it to pay off Sallie Mae. Last week I got a letter in the mail dated March 2nd telling me that I need to pay this in 21 days or it's going to get sent to a collection agency. No prior notice or anything.

So I called up a few minutes ago. The woman I spoke with (whose name was on the letter to call if I had any questions) told me that she had trouble explaining it and was gonna hand off the phone. As she was doing so I heard her saying that "I get confused every time I try to explain this." Then, the woman I get on the phone with might as well have been tech support in India.

Now, before you hit the reply button, keep in mind that this isn't a "Speak English Or Die" thread or anti-immigration thread. My dad was once an illegal immigrant who is now a citizen but still retains a heavy Greek accent. The difference? He's not working for a fucking Bursar's office trying to explain how my life is about to be seriously fucked soon because of financial aid. Goddamn....Fuck college bureaucracy.

This is why guns exist.

Dude. Just pay that shit and be done with it.

That was sarcasm. I seriously hate when people say shit like that. Like you really have 5k sitting around.

Seriously I know all too well what you are talking of. Just be very diligent and talk the highest person you can. Go intot he office and show them you intend on paying and you do not want a collection notice on you. Set up something or it will get really bad. Good luck.

O and stay in school.

BDx13 - 3-8-2007 at 03:23 PM

wait.

you took out a loan, then paid the school.

when you dropped out, the school refunded your money, and you repaid your loan.

so why does the school think you owe them money?
or is that the point (aside from the communication problem?)

can you go there in person, ask to speak with someone else, or have an email exchange?

collections for any company/school/etc. are usually incredibly daft.

i don't know the laws down there for that type of thing but around here they have to make an attempt to contact you before they can send you to a collection agency.

I'm not 100% on how they explained it, but I'm pretty damn sure I do owe them the money. This is their notice for sending me to a collection agency. I spoke to them again and they said that as long as I get some kind of payment plan set up they won't send it to an agency.

Also, I do want to go back to school...soon, too. Hell, maybe as early as the fall. I hope if I get a payment plan set up, I can go back. I finally have a firm idea of what I want to to.

If you dont owe it dont pay... fight it and eventually someone will make sense of it.

BDx13 - 3-8-2007 at 11:12 PM

^ that's for damn sure.

one nice thing about collection agencies, though, is that you can often haggle. they get a cut of whatever they bring in. so if you owe 'em 5,000, offer em 1,500.

As a collector, this makes me want to start a thread.....

I'm big on ignoring anything that's not tax debt. If it's an unsecured loan it's going to go away after about 8 to 10 years. Fuck it, I say.
