ipod or mp3 player?

Voodoobillyman - 4-13-2007 at 02:18 PM

Alright, I will be in the market for one of these very soon as I can't tote all my CDs with me to Iraq, so heres the question, Which is best suited for me? Heres what I want

Something to hold alot of songs/albums
something real simple to use and fill
something I can transfer my CDs on to
nothing fancy, just a music player
something relatively economical

Help you tech people, i really need input on this as I have no clue.

even though they are more expensive I think an iPod is the way to go! I know people that have had good luck with other brands, but more or less the iPod is the best and most people will agree. The iPods are very easy to use, understand and they seem to be better constructed than the others too!

If you want one that will hold LOTS of stuff, I would go with the 30-40 gig. You can get an 80, but thats just silly. I got the 80 just because Im obsessive and needed to have the biggest one I could so I never ran out of space.

I just want it to hold music, I don't need videos or movies or any other stuff, just music. So ipod is the way to go. I have at at least 200 albums I want to load into it, how much memory do you think I need for that? And can you just hook it up to a computer tower and download the cd straight from there or do you need a program to load it into? I am very bad at shit like this

I am also a huge ipod fan. Others on the board have different digital audio players that they love, so I'm sure they'll chime in.

Apple currently has a model with a 30 GB drive which they advertise holds 7,500 songs, and an 80 GB which holds 20,000 songs. The actual number of songs you can fit will vary based on the average length of the songs, as well as the rate and format at which they've been encoded (see below).

To get the songs on your songs on a player, you must load the CD into your computer and use some software (iTunes in the case of the iPod) to copy the songs to your computer and then transfer them to the player.

During this copying process, you will select the file format (MP3, AAC, WAV, etc) and the bit rate (128kb, 160kb, 192kb). The 'average' is a 128kb MP3. The higher the bit rate, the better the sound, the larger the file (thus, the fewer you can fit on a player). Personally, I can hear too much distortion in 128kb MP3s, so I go with 192kb AAC files (AAC offer better compression/quality than MP3s).

Once you've copied the songs to your computer, you plug in the player via USB and copy everything over. Done!

Well, I don't like iTunes and I don't like paying for the name brand of iPod. Sorry Honus and BD. Please don't hate me.

I actually have two different MP3 Players. One is a 30G Creative Zen Jukebox. It is big though. It is about 3 years old. I never had a problem with it. The software that comes with it takes some time to understand though. Long battery life too.

The other is a 512mb RCA Lyra for working out. I love this thing. Small, easy to use (Windows Media Player which is what I use) and great sound quality. Runs on a single aaa battery.

Check out www.mp3.com for some really good info.

The military discount is an awesome thing for iPod.

BD and Honus, can we still be friends?:P

sounds good, but I can't have anything too bulky as space is a BIG issue with only so much afforded to me.

another thing good about iPods is they are really easy to fix if something breaks. Since so many people have em, parts are cheap and easy to get. Even the iPod repair services aren't too bad either. I've even bought some broken ones on eBay, fixed em, and re-sold em or given them as gifts.

I've had an ipod going on for around 3-4 years now. Its been throughly abused over the years. It still works perfectly. My only complaint is that the screen picks up little scratches fairly easy.

defstarsteve - 4-13-2007 at 04:49 PM

I have the 30 gig and wishI would have got the 80 gig
but I have almost 100 gig worth of music once everyone was transfered in

People have awesome luck with the Apple refurbished iPods too and they are cheaper....

anyone that has an iPod or will buy one, go here www.bestskinsever.com and get one of their skins. I have one on mine and it's great...looks like nothing is on the iPod at all but it keeps the thing completely scratch free. Doesn't accidentally come off at all (but can be peeled off if you want to remove it). And they're real cheap. My iPod still looks brand new.

Six66Mike - 4-13-2007 at 10:01 PM

I got an 80GB iPod, based on total size & the volume on them, they are a better deal than the Toshiba's, Creative's or other models. Plus nobody else out there had an 80GB model.

clevohardcore - 4-14-2007 at 02:54 AM

I want to get one soon.

RomanticViolence - 4-14-2007 at 05:57 PM

I like iPod. I have a iPod photo 40GB.

crazyfists28 - 4-14-2007 at 06:01 PM

the only reason i want one is so i can stop listening to old mix tape cassettes i made in high school when i cut the lawn, but to me thats very important

joemaconmovies - 4-14-2007 at 08:53 PM

i'm an ipod guy. it's easy to use. i love 'em but i need to buy a new one.

Muttley - 4-15-2007 at 08:04 PM

Most people i know with Ipods have had some major issue with them, I have a few friends who are already on their second or third.

I have the 30GB Creative Zen player and it works like a charm. But I also use it for a lot of video, and it plays more formats than just about any other player out there. I know you're talkin just music, so this stuff probably doesn't matter to you, it made all the difference for me.

Kid Ugly - 4-15-2007 at 10:13 PM

I have a 30GB Ipod, and I love it. But honestly, Muttley is right, there do tend to be issues with a lot of them, and although you can get a PRP, I doubt there are going to be any Best Buys or Apple stores where you're headed. Get something more reliable.

Your welcome.......
Heathen, Zen also makes this player for only music.

go to creative's website (don't know it off hand)
I had an Ipod and it sucked!
I have the same Zen player as Muttley, I recommended it. I hear the music only player is just as easy to use.......

I'll check it out, thanks man

BDx13 - 4-16-2007 at 12:02 PM

the thing you have to be careful of when you say 'there are a lot of problems with ipods' is that there are fuck load more of them out there than any other player, so yeah, based on scale alone, it will seem like there are more problems.

i have a 40g and my wife has a 10g, both bought in '03, both still running without a problem.
