Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

Pro-Ana websites

I recently found out that my cousin (she?s 16) has an eating disorder. Her height is 5?8 and she weighed 87 pounds. They had to put her in a hospital.
Her mom showed me a list of these websites they found in her computer.

Most of these sites have disclaimers saying that they?re support group sites to help people who have eating disorders.
These sites have sections (tips and tricks) that tell girls (and guys) how to hide their eating disorders from their friends and family and how to ?Purge safely? ect...
Some of these sites do go into the dangers of anorexia & bulimia though.

I don't know what to say. I can't blame webites anymore than i can blame television. I'm so glad i never went through anything like this.

I like to think that I?m raising my kids with a good home life and teaching them how to have confidence in themselves.

This kind of thing scares me?

That is all.

I think they should start holding the service providers responsible for what's on these sites. If a full page white power ad was run in any major paper, I'm reasonably certain the paper would hold some sort of accountability, so why not on the internet?

These websites were the subject of an episode of Boston Legal this season. I was shocked that these sites are allowed to exist. Fucking disgusting.

This may be totally off base. Romantic, I totally feel for you and if you need a friend, count me in. I was listening to an AM radio talk show and they couldn't understand why people were either overweight or had eating disorders. I tried calling in and I got through. I talked to the screener and they asked me what my stance was. I told them that I think our society wants the extremes and that people need to leverage their own networks of friends and family. Use those influences to take control and help themselves. They in turn told me that it wasn't good enough to put on air. i proceeded to tell them to fuck off.

Bottom line, I hope your cousin gets help and helps others learn from all of this.

If there's a market for it they will beat it to death. i've seen a lot of proudly pro-anorexic sites. A lot of people have anorexia fetishes and puke porn is all over the place. i think it's just a case of educating people about the fucked up ideals concerning body image that the media/fashion industry pushes on us before a problem develops.

We can't start banning things but we can hold them up as the prime examples of pure bullshit that they are.
