read that last night. I thought he was a lot older than 44.

clevohardcore - 9-4-2007 at 02:24 PM

I am printing and will read this while the son watches A BUGS LIFE. I dig articles like this.

MyOwnWay - 9-4-2007 at 02:28 PM

Rubin also suggested (strongly) that Columbia become the first major record company to go green and abolish plastic jewel boxes for all its CDs.

...I'm interested in that. What would they be using instead of plastic for cases?

Good article BD. Thanks for posting it. I as well am going to be printing it.

I thought this was so obviousy nowadays:

"The kids all said that a) no one listens to the radio anymore, b) they mostly steal music, but they don't consider it stealing, and c) they get most of their music from iTunes on their iPod. They told us that MySpace is over, it's just not cool anymore; Facebook is still cool, but that might not last much longer; and the biggest thing in their life is word of mouth. That's how they hear about music, bands, everything."

Few of the kids knew that record companies participate only in the profits from records

They'd use digipaks instead of jewels I'd guess.

DaveMoral - 9-4-2007 at 04:53 PM

This "word of mouth" department sounds like the ole street team mainstay of hardcore labels.

Later on in that article Rubin and others talked about a "subscription" based medium to acquire music rather than through the brick and mortar means of the past. I hate that idea, I would much rather have something tangible in my hands than a download.

CR83 - 9-4-2007 at 06:05 PM

The article gives me a sense of hope in Rubin. I thought it was very well written. The bottom line though is how to make money off the backs of the artists. They even mention asking for 50% of the concert and t-shirt revenues. Ugh, this is for sure the ugly side of music but is it a necessary evil? I don't know.

JUICE MAYNE MSHC - 9-4-2007 at 06:12 PM

I could care less about tangible product. I honestly don't care about that at all anymore. I bought the new Municipal Waste from iTunes and it came with a PDF file of all the album art so I didn't need the actual CD. But the subscription thing is the stupidest fucking thing ever to me. They have these services now and basically once you stop paying the fee every month you no longer have access to your music. Maybe mainstream retards who listen to the first 35 seconds of the same 25 songs all the time will be into that but not me.

great article.

thanks D!

This will never effect underground music. Ever. Unless you're worried about Nelly or Dixie Chicks I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest.

The downside is that maybe if it did it would kill off all the HC labels, the scene would implode, start anew and we would only get to hear good bands instead of everyones friends bands who are "really good dudes".

MikeFromInhuman - 9-5-2007 at 08:59 AM

Im printing this out now to read a bit later, thanks!

hardtone - 9-5-2007 at 05:57 PM

MySpace is far from over, but most of that stuff I agree with...

It's a good read.

So sad that it's so true.
