Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

The Da Vinchi Code......

GOLD GRILL - 3-6-2005 at 03:17 AM

I just finished this book and must say that Dan Brown is one sneaky little liberal shit. He has convinced most of the low-brow fucks that have read this book of the authenticity of the rumors that he passes off as facts. As one of the characters in the book states, "Everyone loves a good conspiracy". Brown uses this to stir the imaginations and excite the uniformed. He strikes low blows at the Catholic Church every chance he gets using contravercial (at best) documents as evidence suggesting a cover-up of the true nature of Jesus Christ. It wouldn't be so bad if this was told as a story, but the intent to pass off as truth the details in the story is evident from the first page where one is expected to take Brown's word that all information relayed in the book is accurate; without a works cited page no less. Lets not overlook the fact that most people who write historical ficiton have a degree in History, Anthropology, Theology, or related fields. Brown represents a mere English degree. I'd expect something this irresponsible, agenda driven, and subversive from Michael Moore or George Bush. Now I can also expect it from Dan Brown. I can't wait to read Angels and Demons. These are just my thoughts, I'd like to hear what other people on the board who may have read this book have to say.

I didnt even knew you could read?!
its a good book and an interesting story, I didnt read all that much into it.

it have relation to DaVinci's Inquest? the Canadian show?

it's such a well done show. it's very realistic and not 'movie like'

i'm not a strong reader, so i don't really touch anything with that many pages. but my wife read it, and didn't like it. i believe 'ridiculous' was the word she used. i think the the way the book was written was part of what made it so popular - people wanted to believe that it was true.

Someone has been sending threats to Multiplex in Australia, some huge construction company. All the letters have been written in Da Vinci code which is hilarious.
I don't read books, just look at the pictures in magazines.

If you read this book and believe it to be a true story your a total idiot. Anyone with half a brian would understand fiction is fiction.

It is a good read, he tends to ruin his stories in the last 2 or 3 chapters. Personally I found the book hard to put down and since I have to skim alot of books I think that is saying something.

Angels and Demons was better.

As for the whole "liberal thing"...what the hell are you talking about?

does reading star wars books count as reading?

Lilith - 3-8-2005 at 04:51 PM

it never seemed to me that this was supposed to pass for fact in any way. then again, i'm not a low-brow fuck so i probably interpreted it differently than others. to me, it was entertaining fluff. it is painfully easy to knock the Catholic church these days, no need for fiction.

BDx13 - 3-8-2005 at 05:13 PM

i don't think it was, but you know how the general public can be!

I have suggested this book to a ton of library patrons and none of them thought it was factual.

GabeTexasGAMC - 3-8-2005 at 08:53 PM

I like it, no matter what, but I did like Angels and Demons better.

BDx13 - 3-8-2005 at 10:16 PM

i didn't mean do suggest that the general public was dumb or being duped, rather that when something becomes as popular as that book did, people sometimes take things to the next level. there were tons of articles in the news about how people were doing additional research and visiting the sites mentioned on the book. frenzy might be the right word.

Reminds me of the time i read the illuminatis trilogy by robert anton wilson and i was playing a computer game called deus ex...both dealt with the illuminati , i got wicked paranoid and become obsessed with conspiracy theory....it lasted only a week though, then i probaly became obsessed with a different video game/movie/book theme.

godabandonedme - 3-9-2005 at 01:14 AM

There was a good documentry on the History Channel that totally debunked the whole theory(s) behind that book.

In response to the bystander fella, I was shocked to see that people believed this as well, but one can see why some of the simpler folk would take this fiction to heart. As for the whole liberal thing, I just threw the word liberal in as a random insult (no offense). Being liberal is like being gay; nowdays everyone acts like it's ok, but deep inside they really know that you are going to hell.

I found it a really entertaining book to read and finished it in 2 days or so, but people who believe all the 'facts' he's portraying are also likely to believe the Indiana Jones movies to be the absolute truth and based on true stories. The locations are all real though, I've actually been in most of them, cf. the Rosaly Chapel is indeed an odd building, but in no way have I tried to count all the glasses of the pyramid in front of the Louvres or so. I understand it's hard for people to seperate fiction from non-fiction in this novel, but that's not the point, it's just a good story. I can imagine the ultra-conservate catholics in the US throwing a huge fit about it, hasn't that happend yet?

Liberalism does not mean your going to hell, it actually means your following Christ's teachings. Maybe you should go back and read the bible, seems like so many evagelical hicks need to. Then after reading that maybe read everything the founding fathers wrote. Maybe then you can give me my God and my Country back.

"Let those without sin cast the first stone"

GOLD GRILL - 3-11-2005 at 05:21 AM

Please elaborate; I was joking about the going to hell thing (I really don't think that at all) but I was wondering about the Liberal standpoint being biblical. I have read The Confessions of St. Augustine, Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross, much of Summa Theologica by Aquinas, and works of St. Jerome; I believe that these would constitute a large portion of the founding fathers writings. So go ahead and lay out the liberal agenda for me, using the founding fathers writings as a foundation for abortion, communism, and welfare. GABE
