Michael Mann...America's greatest living director...(Heat, Collateral, Miami Vice, Thief, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans, Manhunter)...is signed on
to direct DeNiro in The Winter of Frankie Machine...yes Virginia...there IS a Santa Claus. Bad Assery is imminent.

What do you mean by the last 2 sentences? What isthe story about? Who is Virgina? and who is Frankie Machine?

haha, I'm babbling, the "yes virginia" line is from miracle on 34th st and is used once in a while, or so I've heard it anyways...meaninging
satisfaction...you'll have to forgive me, I was babbling out of gleee as Mann is my all time favorite director.
The Winter of Frankie Machine is a book by a guy named Don Winslow. Its about a mob hitman named Frank Maccianno who's retired and runs a bait shop
and linen service in San Fran. He ends up reluctantly getting involved with somthing as a favor to the local mob bosses son, all hell breaks loose and
he has to jump back in to save his own skin. It's basically the perfect vehicle for DeNiro at this point in his life IF done right and he was involved
with it before the book was even released (which leads me to think it may have been created for him...but lets not delve into conspiracy theories). At
first he was supposed to direct and star, then Scorsese was rumored to be directing...which would have been cool right? DeNiro returning to mob movies
WITH Scorsese??? Then I heard Scorsese became uninvolved in it and it looked like it might not get made...then today on Aintitcoolnews.com a variety
article was referenced stating Mann was now involved.

Sounds like a potential winner. I love me some DeNiro.

O hell ya. Dude is genious.
Mann is not bad either. I bought THE INSIDER simply becasue of how that movie was made. It is sucha cool movie. Its funny how when he makes a movie
that has soo much information to convey and it feels boring or slow, but it never is. Is my point getting across? Its hard to explain but some
directors can take an actor and make the silent or the dialogue boring but be a good story or have a good point. With the INSIDER it seems slow but it
isn't. Every second you feel the tension and worry the actor and the story is conveying. I attribute that to the direction the movie is following.
Eyes Wide Shut was like that too, but with another awsome director at the helm.

He's a master director. I mean look at Miami Vice...terrible plot...sub par dialogue...but the movie was beautiful and holds your attention for every
frame.
I'd say my favorite 3 Mann films in order
1. Heat
2. Manhunter
3. Thief
I kind of dig that he's directing this, what Scorsese would have done would have been great..but done before.
