Love em' or Hate em' what bands deserve respect?

XHonusWagnerX - 11-13-2007 at 07:31 PM

Who do you think deserves respect wether you love or hate them?

Bad Brains: They are DC's longest running hardcore band and even though some of the stuff they put out wasnt of the quality of their best stuff they never sacraficed their ethics or did something that they didnt want to do.

Ramones: Hell... they practicly started it all! They put out some crappy records here and there, but their good stuff has gotten more kids into punk than any other band.

Descendents: They did alot of what the Ramones did, except they did it touring in a van rather than a bus and they survived a huge hiatius when Milo left and they were just as good when they came back!

Melvins: They are one of the ultimate DIY bands. They Have been going and going and going and had very little to no commercial success at all. They also put out more records than most any other punk band out there!

I got into what I consider "real" punk/hardcore when I was around 12ish in I guess about 92. I thought (and still think) I was super lucky to find bands like the decendents, Face to Face, Social D etc. that opened my eyes/ears to real quality music and lyrics. Personally, I think the longevity of a band has nothing to do with their sucess moniterally(sp?) or fan base wise.... Kiss has been around forever and they blow. I can't stand Aerosmith same with them. I think bands like Social D, Face to Face esp. and many others deserve alot more respect then they get even out of "their own" punk/whatever community.

Poison Idea: way better in my opinion than 98% of the bands that came after them.

Snapcase for what they did in the mid-late 90s hardcore. Also Victory Records as a whole for that era.

Screeching Weasel also, been around forever and turn out amazing records all the time.

Screeching Weasel is a good call. By far I think Sicko was or is one of the best punk/indie bands ever that always stayed small.

I agree... For that reason I think bands like JUDGE, SIDE BY SIDE and NEGATIVE FX deserve respect just for doing what they did in the short time they were active.

Hell Yah... Black Flag is the band that really got me into punk/hardcore.

They make the list for a ton of reasons, but one of the biggest is the fact that they were a great band for years before Rollins joined which is when alot of people consider to be the start of the band.

Morris, Chavo, Dez, Rollins... YES!

The Avengers and Black Market Baby don't get enough respect, I've heard sooo many bands over the years that totally rip off Black Market baby's sound.

And Stranglehold, listen to some Stranglehold and then throw on some Rancid, you'll see what I'm talkin' about.

I don't like the Melvins, but I def. respect them.

Descendents - love em, respect em and wish they would tour again.

Aside from Screeching Weasel, Face To Face, and Snapcase, I agree with every band on this list. Screeching Weasel are vastly overrated and have only managed to inspire crappy clone bands. Face To Face wrote a handful of decent pop songs, but were just a bunch of failed Metal guys trying to make a buck. Snapcase have no real merit whatsoever.

Slade don't get enough credit at all.
And The Accused should be more vaunted.
Big Black are never talked about either.

Nirvana. Why? Kurt made damn sure that they couldn't do a cash-in reunion like far too many other bands.

It's been awhile... I can make bad suicide jokes, right? I thought so.

Piggy-backing off the last useless comment... Glenn Danzig, for not doing a Misfits reunion. I'd pay to see it, but it really is probably better without seeing it.

Kurt shooting himself was the best thing for rock musci because it got Dave Grohl out from behind the frum kit...
