Covers better than the Originals...

XHonusWagnerX - 11-14-2007 at 06:49 PM

Might get some crap for this one, but I say...

Drinking & Driving by Burnt by the Sun is better than the original Black Flag version.

what other covers do you guys think are better than the original?

upyerbum - 11-14-2007 at 06:56 PM

The Johnny Cash version of "Hurt".
I don't know about better, but The Ducky Boys really tore up "Razors in the Night".

CR83 - 11-14-2007 at 07:05 PM

"Goodbye to you" by Kill Your Idols

Mark Lind - 11-14-2007 at 07:22 PM

Guns N' Roses version of "Aint It Fun" by the Dead Boys.

BKT - 11-14-2007 at 07:50 PM

I LOVE Motorhead, but I agree with that too.

Mark Lind - 11-14-2007 at 08:09 PM

Blood for Blood has always been good with cover songs.

I'll give you this..... GNR covers usually sucked. But this one is far and away better than the original in my opinion.

Its not like I'm saying that Pearl Jam did a better job on "Sonic Reducer". But the Dead Boys version of "Ain't It Fun" came across as half baked anyway compared to some of their other tunes.

Insanity. That's one of the best songs on that album and I don't think there's much on there that's below the rank of GREAT. Of course, I think I'd rather listen to dogs puking than GNR anyday, but whatever.

Mark Lind - 11-14-2007 at 10:25 PM

There's a reason why that is the Dead Boys album that is out of print. It's not bad.... its just not the perfection of the first one.

morgan - 11-14-2007 at 11:10 PM

Ring of Fire- Social Distortion. Blasphemy I know but I can't stand Johnny Cash's version. But I do like his cover of Hurt.

Out of print? I see that record all over the place, not to mention there being multiple versions of it out. Regardless, the very worst thing anyone associated with the name Dead Boys ever released is too good to be fucked with by any member of GNR.

Such an amazing cover! This gets my vote as well.

Who the hell is Burnt By The Sun? I've never even heard the name outside of this thread.

moforn - 11-14-2007 at 11:48 PM

The replacements version of "Black Diamond" is much better than the original (Kiss).

moforn - 11-14-2007 at 11:52 PM

Also, the Dead Boys take on "Tell Me" gives the original a good run for it's money. And while it's debatable which is better- the Nomads did a pretty strong rendition of the Lyres "She Pays the Rent".

DaveMoral - 11-15-2007 at 01:19 AM

Almost any song Cash covered is better than the originals.

It was unavailable for years. I just looked it up now and it appears that "We've Come For Your Children" finally got a proper release in November of 1999.

In all fairness I hadn't heard the original in years so I dug the CD out tonight for another listen. The song is brilliant. But this is one of those rare occasions where I feel like a pro drummer and a better guitar player improved the song. The rest of those songs on that GNR cover album were pretty lifeless in comparison to the originals but this one wins out in my opinion.

I guess it doesn't really matter though. It was a flop for both bands so its like arguing over who is the bigger loser. But that tune should have been a mega rock hit.

random - 11-15-2007 at 01:52 AM

"You can't put your arms around a memory" by Sheer Terror. Much better than hearing some junkie singing it.

Not sure if the JT version or The Bruisers version is better... "Don't you... TRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY" I might have to side with JT, though I do love The Bruisers.

tireironsaint - 11-15-2007 at 01:55 AM

Fair enough Mark, glad you checked it out again none the less. I'll always rate the Dead Boys as one of the best bands ever, not to mention the epitome of classic American Punk.

They are metal/grindish type band that is on Relapse Records. They have been around since 1999 I believe and feature ex members of Kiss The Cynic. Their drummer Dave Witte is in Municipal Waste and Melt Bananana. Soundtrack To The Revolution is far and away their best material IMHO.

Siczine.com - 11-15-2007 at 02:13 AM

PS-95% of this board will hate this...I know you will Tire.

Blood Feast did it too and it was also better

XHonusWagnerX - 11-15-2007 at 08:33 AM

The Led Zeppelin songs that Coalesce did are better than the originals in my opinion.

I am a fan of KISS, but almost anyone doing a KISS song is better than the original.

Voodoobillyman - 11-15-2007 at 02:46 PM

Alot of the stuff Mike Ness covered on his solo album "Under the Influences" was really damn good, and sometimes better than the original. I also whole heartedly agree that anything Blood for Blood covered was definitely made their own if not better than the original versions. And Dave Moral hit the nail on the head with Cash as well, he can do no wrong when handling someone elses tune.

MikeFromInhuman - 11-16-2007 at 02:00 PM

"Guns N' Roses version of "Aint It Fun" by the Dead Boys. "

I think I agree!
That is a SICK cover.

All of GNRs covers kill.

Although I think best cover ever goes to Bruce Springsteen's version of 'War' by Edwin Star. Nothing is heavier.
