Friday afternoon I park and start walking into a Dunkin Donuts and two guys in a white van pull up. One of the guys gets my attention and asks if Im
interested in a surround sound system. I cautiously walk over to the van and he explains to me that they have a brand new surround sound system that
thier supplier accidentally loaded in thier van. They claim to be installers and have 30 minutes before they have to go install the units they got.
But since they were mistakenly given 2 extras they are willing to let it go for a hell of a deal since they will end having thier boss take at the end
of the day. They were not sketchy looking and they were really polite in a nice newer van.
At this point he opens the van door where I saw a bunch of surround sound systems in new boxes. he pulls out one and then opens up a magazine to
validate its qaulity. It shows a full page ad with a retali price listing . The system is apparently worth $3200. After I tried to politly insist I
didnt need one, he said well he will give me a great deal at 700 bucks just to take it off thier hands since they only have 30 mins to be at the next
install job. He then has his friend produce the Invoice from the supplier showing its a "PAID" account and that there is nothing shady going on. It
was simply a mistake on the suppliers part.
Eventually he got to the point where I could have gotten the thing for $200-$300, but there was no way I was gonna buy it no matter the price.
I did some research online and talked to some people at work and aparently this is a very well known scam. Its done 'legally' and the guys in the van
just drive around telling that story trying to sell the units (or speakers or whatever). They have a minimum price they are allowed to get for it and
anything over that price is what they are paid for the day. I read that some guys will make $2000+ in less than 1/2 a days work.
Anyone else ever have this happen or hear of this?BDx13 - 11-27-2007 at 10:50 AM

The guy was willing to open the box and everything that Ive read says that it actually is a 100% functioning system. Its just not of the quality that
they are promoting and it has a MUCH lower actual value!bombidol - 11-27-2007 at 11:37 AM
They do it here with laptops. Dude will pull up in a car/van and tell you he has a bad ass laptop he needs to get rid of for like 100/200 bucks.
They'll show you the laptop and the case etc but when you reach into your wallet they pull a switch with a case with a brick in it. Anyone who would
fall for it is a sap BUT at the same time im sure people have scored some bad ass shit with similar things. If you could see the system in the box and
maybe open it etc dick around with it, pull it out of the van and sit it beside you THEN pay. Perhaps.JawnDiablo - 11-27-2007 at 11:47 AM
i HAD A dude hit me up with that offer on friday at WaWa near Norristown.
It's happened to me a few times....CR83 - 11-27-2007 at 12:04 PM
The only thing that came close to this was I was with the girl that works for me and we were out getting lunch at a grocery store. I then parked
outside the pet store to buy dog food. My co-worker was still in the front seat of my car. A lady came up to her with a strip of paper telling her
it is perfume. Some name brand shit.
She kept saying, "Just smell it. It is OK I work for the manufacturer. Just try it." I came out because this lady wouldnt' leave. She came up to
me with the piece of paper. I then said, "Get the fuck away from me and my friend or I will fucking hit you." Her repsonse was "Sir, you don't
understand. I work for the manfucaturer. It's cool." My response was, "Leave now or I will punch my first female in the face. Get the fuck away
from me."
She walked away and started walking up to others in the parking lot. I should have called the cops. It was totally like the e-mail that went around
years ago. She might have been 38 and was sort of well dressed.JawnDiablo - 11-27-2007 at 12:28 PM

My old roomate was looking for a surround sound system years back, and I had a couple of guys in a van pull up and give me the same sales pitch. Even
had the paperwork for the warranty. I bought a $3500 set for $800. My buddy still loves it, and is still using it 7 or 8 years later. I still these
kind of guys around. If I had the cash I'd get a system for myself.JawnDiablo - 11-27-2007 at 02:26 PM

These seems to happen all the time up in the Red Lion plaza in NE Philly. Me and my friends have been approached 3 times by the exact same kind of
guys while waiting for our Taco Bell. Also had some bum come up to me, reaking of booze and asked me for $10 because he's out of gas and needs to get
his daughter to the hospital.JawnDiablo - 11-27-2007 at 04:59 PM

Humans are lying, thieving, scumbags. I NEVER trust these things, if it's really what they say it is, they stole it. Otherwise, it's a scam of some
sort and either way I want nothing to do with it or them.Spoiler - 11-27-2007 at 08:48 PM
I've been approached with deals like that (same story as Honus) a couple of timesclevohardcore - 11-28-2007 at 12:25 AM
