Bands that have gotten better with age??

XHonusWagnerX - 12-11-2007 at 01:59 PM

I think that both ALL and the DESCENDENTS have both gotten better over the years. I love the early stuff, but I just think that the new stuff is overall stronger and the production quality is obviously better.

Usually it goes the other way and the later records a band puts out are more on the weak side....

What other bands have aged well?

DeathByForce - 12-11-2007 at 02:07 PM

Ducky Boys
Dropkick Murphys

Chaos UK, was a time I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole, but I like the newer stuff.

I'm gonna have to think about this one because theres so many artists I once loved who have gone south as far as me liking them as their careers kept going....

Ducky Boys
Dropkick Murphy's (in terms of the band since Al Barr took over vocal duties)

The Beatles

The Replacements

U2

Angels & Airwaves (specifically Tom Delonge when you consider his Blink 182 amateur stuff from way back before they went mainstream)

Bombshell Rocks - I loved them from their first record on but I think their newest might be their best

Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Green Day

Rancid

I'd like to think the Ducky Boys got better too. I tried to model the Ducky Boys comeback after the Replacements. Like, "No Gettin Out" and "Dark Days" were like Sorry Ma and Hootenanny but I wanted our comeback records to be more like Tim and Pleased to Meet Me. And some people agree that we got stronger. And that makes me feel happy. Thanks.

I'm gonna' get crapped upon from great heights for this, but I think the last 3 Motorhead albums were better than anything they've put out since Orgasmatron. In particular Inferno.

Misf...never mind

Social Distortion for sure.

I'd sort of agree...but I'd move it up to 1916 because when Philthy left the band the party was over. 1916 is debateably the last classic/essential Motorhead album...Rock' N' Roll is 100% no arguement the last essential Motorhead album.

That doesn't necessarily mean they've gotten better with age...they're just going through the peaks and valleys any band around 30 years will inevitably have. This new stuff is just a new era in a storied career...the transitional years with Dee on drums ended those few albums back and they're writing as a unit which is always going to produce better than not.

As far as a band that actually has gotten better with age...I don't think that such a thing technically exists. If a band has a slow start and then all the pieces fall into place they're still going to eventually go into disarray or else the band would stay together forever. No band EVER gets better after their classic album...or it wouldn't be their classic (or a string of classics if they have a good run) there will always be a decline after that. So any band thats better now then they were before is just going to disappoint you in the end.
