If anyone didn't catch it and actually gives a damn, here's my breakdown...

1) Funny how the guy who knocked out Kimbo's current opponent on the last EliteXC card is in the first fight of the night, while the guy who got knocked out is in the main event.

2) Phil Baroni needs to... well, he needs to do lots of things. Frank Shamrock kicked his ass. Hose destroyed him on the ICON card for several rounds. And he got beat in the first round tonight. I thought it would be his lack of cardio again tonight, but it didn't even make it to that point.

3) I was impressed with Gina Carano. I'm just wondering how that fight would have gone if she cut the other 4.5 pounds that she was supposed to in order to make weight (though they usually give an extra pound, so she probably only needed to cut 3.5 lbs). She didn't look weak at all from the weight cut or have any loss of stamina, which makes me think she should've sucked it up and cut the weight. I still think she would've won the fight, but it would have had an added level of legitimacy if she made weight.

4) How the fuck did they not give Scott Smith five minutes to recover after the eye poke? Seriously, every fucking eye poke or groin shot gives the receiver up to five minutes to recover. For some odd reason, fighters don't always take the five minutes, but it's their option. See GSP-Hughes II for an example of the groin shot. Maybe this is just an odd state athletic commission thing, but Smith should have had his five minutes to recover, then the doctor should have checked the eye again.
This was one of the worst stoppages I've seen... right up there with the recent Penn-Sherk fight (what's with these terrible recent stoppages?).

5) Still on the Lawler-Smith fight. I saw some of the play-by-play on sherdog and mmajunkie... how the fuck do you have Lawler winning round 2??? Lawler definitely took round 1, but Smith was landing more and better shots in round 2 and split Lawler's head wide fucking open.

6) I've over Kimbo. It was entertaining for a while. Seemed like he was training to become legit. He looked like absolute shit tonight. And that was flat out the most bullshit stoppage I've ever seen in MMA. I fully believe that fight was fixed. Even if the injury did warrant a stoppage, that's a call for a doctor to make, and not the ref. I'm fine with ref stoppages for injuries when it's something like a cut bleeding into an eye and a fighter obviously not being able to see. But aside from that cauliflower ear making me sick, there's no reason that a ref should have ever stopped that fight. Thompson got rocked. Big deal... lots of guys get rocked. Tim Sylvia rocked Big Nog for a long fucking time, but Nog kept going a sank in a deep guillotine. Thompson was still standing. Not just bullshit. That was a fix.

i actually disagree with you.
i think the stoppage was ok.
i watched it in slow motion
thompson was rocked.
and his ear was punched off.
i dont think it was fixed.
unlike tank/kimbo where i think tank took a dive.
i think the ref stopped it cuz he was rocked pretty bad and not cuz of the ear.
watch it again in slow motion.
dude was hurtin bad.

i like kimbo cuz he is a character
i like anyone like that.
will he ever be "great"?
i doubt it.
i still dig him though.

He definitely got rocked, and rocked hard. I totally agree with you on that. And I thought he was close to being done. But I've never seen a fight get stopped like that. Smith got rocked way harder than that at the end of the first round and they didn't stop it. I'm just saying the plenty of guys get rocked that hard (or worse) and recover to keep fighting or even win fights.

Baroni, on the other hand, tried to hook the ref's leg about 20 seconds after the fight was over... that's always a sign that a guy's fucking out of it.

In thinking about it a little more, I'm wondering if maybe the refs were told to err on the side of caution since it was the first MMA card on free TV. Seems like a reasonable explanation given the whole "human cockfighting" stereotype and would also explain the bad stoppage in Lawler-Smith. It would absolutely play up the "fighter safety is our number one concern" image to the casual viewer, and I do think they want to build that reputation.

oh it totally has to do with that
i wont be suprised if the refs had an ear piece with officials telling them when it was enough.
once his ear exploded, im sure someone said they better pull the plug on that shit quick
