whats the difference between an APP and a WIDGET?

As far as I have seen it seems like a widget is somthing displayed on the screen as it does it's function such as a clock or calendar where an App is
somthing you load up to use it's functions like a computer program.
This is a computer image but shows what widgets are. The calendar page, the weather widget...
