300, even 240, has been fine for most of the traditional stuff i've done.
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

it only needs to stay in vector form if they have printers that R.I.P capable if not they default back to dots....
300 is fine, I use it on everything...
and I've had no complaints yet
if you have something 300 dpi and want to convert it to be smooth at 600 dpi this is what you do
take the image size and multiply it by 3 but leave the dpi alone for now
so if it's 10"x10" make it 30"x30" at 300 dpi
then change you dpi to 600
now reduce it again
this will force all curves to 600 dots into each square inch and will smooth out any problems
you can do the same thing for going from 72 dpi to 300 but you have to multiply by 5
who would make original art at 72 dpi anyhow
damn kids and their stolen photoshop.... learn how to use it

a 300 DPI TIFF file has been more than good enough for all the graphics and stuff I have done and a bunch were CD covers and stuff like that.
