Man Stabs a Baby Girl in Her Stroller
By MICHELLE O'DONNELL and JANON FISHER
A man with a knife walked up to a nanny pushing a 10-month-old girl in a stroller in Washington Heights last evening and plunged a knife into the
baby's stomach, critically injuring her, the police said.
The man, whom a police official described as emotionally disturbed, was taken into custody for questioning.
The bizarre attack, which took place just after 5 p.m. in front of an apartment building at 255 Fort Washington Avenue around the corner from the
baby's home, horrified passers-by who were drawn by the nanny's cries.
Two nannies pushing strollers were walking in front of the building, just south of 171st Street, said a witness, Christina Alonzo, 14, according to
her mother, Julia Alonzo.
Christina, who was one of a handful of people on the block at the time, was standing in front of the building talking to a friend when she felt a man
brush past her and saw him lean into one of the strollers, which was facing him, her mother said.
She thought the man, who was wearing a bright lime green shirt, intended to grab the baby, but instead he stabbed her and ran down the block.
The nanny, a 20-year-old woman, according to the police, screamed for help and cradled the baby, who was bleeding profusely, in her arms. She flagged
down a car and was about to get in when a police cruiser arrived and drove them four blocks south to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia hospital.
Last night the baby, whom the police identified as Isabelle Avins, was listed in critical but stable condition.
Isabelle's father, Jon, spoke briefly to reporters outside the family's home on West 170th Street and praised the actions of the nanny, whom he did
not identify.
"The baby sitter saved her life," he said, adding, "She's like a member of our family."
Mr. Avins also praised the emergency workers who tended to Isabelle. He added, "My wife is as you could expect her to be."
Although only a few people were in the immediate vicinity of the attack, others were drawn to the scene by the nanny's cries for help.
A passer-by, Aurelia Vasquez, 40, who was walking west on 171st Street toward Fort Washington Avenue, said she heard the nanny's cries and saw a man
in a green shirt running into 270 Fort Washington Avenue soon after the attack.
"I was crossing the street and I heard someone screaming," said Ms. Vasquez, 40, a home health aide.
Christina Alonzo, who was standing nearby, was too upset by the sight of Isabelle's gaping wound to speak about the attack to a reporter. Her mother
said, "How is my daughter going to sleep tonight?"
Victor Peralta, a maintenance worker from Roosevelt Hospital, was walking across the street and saw the nanny crying and a man running away. He said
he tried to chase the man, but lost him when a city bus drove by. "I just had a feeling that he did something wrong," Mr. Peralta said. "He was
running away from the scene when everyone was running to the scene."
A man matching the description of the attacker was picked up a short time afterward by the police, who took him to the 33rd Precinct station house for
questioning. He was identified as Bernard Derr, 48, who lives at 270 Fort Washington Avenue. The police official who described Mr. Derr as emotionally
disturbed did not elaborate on his condition.
The police said that a knife found behind 270 Fort Washington Avenue would be tested to see if it was the one used in the attack.
The building has a mix of apartments that residents said rent for $1,500 to $1,800 a month, as well as some apartments that rent to people in a
supportive housing program for the mentally ill affiliated with the Federation Employment and Guidance Service Inc.
Some residents said they thought that Mr. Derr lived in the building through the sponsorship of that program, but that could not be confirmed last
night.
At the hospital yesterday, a doctor consoled the other nanny, who sat on a step outside the emergency room, covering her face with her hands and
weeping.
A woman who identified herself as a friend of the Avins family read a statement from the family to reporters.
"Tonight baby Isabelle is fighting for her life," the woman, who did not identify herself, said. "The family wishes to thank the New York City Police
Department and neighborhood good Samaritans who rushed her to the hospital, and doctors at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital who saved her life."
A neighbor, Vahni Cantino, 22, whose apartment on Fort Washington Avenue overlooks the Avins backyard, said that the family was friendly and also has
an older daughter. She said Mr. Avins grows tomatoes in the backyard that he always promises to share. "They're a really sweet family," Ms. Cantino, a
ballet dancer, said. "I'm surprised," she added. "I generally would call this a safe neighborhood."

This sick fuck should die but they'll say he's "mentally ill" and needs "treatment" all of which is at the taxpayers expense. Bastard should be
strung up.

I am speachless. My wife and I have a 2 month old, and the mere thought of this is so disturbing, I cant even think straight. This definitely shows
that the whole social structure in this country, as well as most everything else needs some real changes before anything can attempt to get better.
Personally,if I were the father, I would wait outside the court where he will be arraigned with a handgun and I would shoot the fucker as many times
as possible. No jury in the world would convict you on that.

THe most desired job for me IF I could get paid would be a hitman for all molester and rapists and murderers. It would be nice to hunt the evil scum
down and make them suffer the way they make others suffer. Like the movie things to do in denver when your dead - Steve Buescemi character. You never
know when it happens until it does.
