ATTN: JUICE or other Memphis residents

So from what I hear, there have been a bunch of great shows in Memphis since Katrina because so many of the New Orleans jazz musicians have taken up residence with the bluesmen of your home town. Have any of you gotten out to see any of these parings?

nah man. Me caring about blues shows is like you caring about going on a tour of the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, you know what I mean? I know there's shit going on but I hate going out to bars so I miss it all. They did move a lot of shit here though, most notably the Voodoo Music Fest on Halloween Weekend which a lot of big bands are playing to raise money to rebuild New Orleans.

yeah, i figured that might be the case. probably plenty of good music being played, but who wants to deal with the drama. many of the big name jazz clubs here are around time square (strike 1), full of tourists (strike 2) and have huge cover charges and drink minimums (you're out!).

there used to be this tiny little basement club called smalls in the west village... $10 cover, byob, open from 10pm to 10am seven days a week. it was not at all unusual to be sitting there at three in the morning and see whatever big name musician who was playing birdland or iridium that night walk in, walk right up to the stage and start playing with whoever was already up there. but in typical nyc fashion, that club got squeezed out.
