I got it locally. Theres a Stop & Shop just outside of Providence in an area that has a heavy Jewish population. The center aisle thats usually set up for whatever the current holiday is... well at that Stop & Shop it was set up for Passover, rather than Easter. So I headed on down and picked me up a few bottles!

The only thing better than Passover Coke is Mexican Coke. Its the same stuff, but the Mexican Coke comes in old style glass bottles which just makes it a tad bit cooler!

yah it does! Its the 'original recipe'. Its got sugar cane and its way better than Coke is now.

If anyone lives in Texas you can get it in some stores in Texas because it comes in from Mexico. I think that Sams Clubs in Texas usually have it. I know someone in Denver that has gotten it before too.

^^^^^^^^^ But I thought that they went back to the original back in the early 80's? I understand without the cocaleaf but it was supposed to be back by popular demand right? SO its not? THat was a huge marketing ploy by them back in the eighties.

From the information I can find, it seems like that was the original formula in the sense that it was the one used before New Coke. I think they changed from sugar cane to corn syrup due to cost in 1935.

_____________________________________________

The closest formula to the original that can be purchased is the 1935 kosher formula which is still produced (as of 2008) though it may be difficult to find outside of Passover, where it is sold in 2-Liter bottles with a yellow cap marked with a circle around the letter U followed by a P, indicating that the Orthodox Union certifies the soda as Kosher for Passover. While the current American Coke formula is kosher, during Passover most observant Jews do not consume corn products or their derivatives, which prevents them from consuming High fructose corn syrup. Even sugar-based formulas would still require certification of both the local formula and the specific bottling plant, as the strictures of Kashrut on Passover are far higher and more complicated than usual kosher observance.

it does come in cans, but its VERY hard to find. From what Ive read they only have cans in the NYC area and even at that, they are rare.

a little more info I just got from a friend.....

So "Classic Coke" wasnt ACTUALLY the original recipe - It substituted corn syrup for cane sugar. Passover Coke uses Sucrose, which is close, but doesnt taste exactly the same as cane sugar. Mexican coke still uses cane sugar. In further strangeness, they change the amount of sugar slightly by region - supposedly coke in the south is slightly sweeter than coke in new england.

You my friend are to blame for the NEW COKE (aka COKE II) fiasco! they changed it because Pepsi was catching up in US sales and people liked Pepsi because it was sweeter.

If they marketed Passover Coke as All-Natural Coke they'd make a fucking killing. They could actually break into the Whole Foods Market type stuff.

Your probably right, but they reason they stopped making it was the cost. its probably something they just dont want to be bothered with.

^I find that to be rediculous though. I can get Whole Foods 365 Cola made with evaporated cane juice instread of HFCS for 50 cents a can. I think cans of Coke are going for more than that now...

There's a Whole Foods on South Street, one down by the Art Museum right next to the police station on Callowhill. There's also one in Wynnewood on Lancaster.

I'm glad I could make Coke see the error in their ways.
