travelling to Europe

My wife and I have decided to take a long dreamed of trip to Europe for two weeks in September 2009. She will be done school then and we will have been able to save up some money to do it.

We want to see parts of Scotland, England (london and area), Paris for sure.

We have read that it's possible and highly recommended to go to Florence and Rome as well.

Anyone do it? Dave i'm looking at you. Any thorpsters in Europe now would be the time to chime in.

I'm more inclined and interested in heading to Germany but we've got two weeks so we're trying to figure out what the best options are for our limited budget.

I'd personally stay away from Rome. Yeah its historically rich and shit but its a total fucking shithole. Its filthy hole. Go north in Italy. Somewhere like Mantova, its amazing.

Barcelona is really beautiful.... but Berlin & London were my favorites of the stuff I have seen.

i liked rome and florence. lots of cool and beautiful stuff to see. yes, rome is full of traffic and exhaust fumes so that's a trade-off. florence is much cleaner. they're both cities you need to spend more than one day to see. maybe not the best for a short trip. do you know how you'll be travelling?

probably by Eurorail. I know it's impossible to see it all in one trip but we want to get the highlights for our first time there.

Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

i spent a fair amount of time in europe in the 90s and i fucking loved it. going to shows, meeting people, seeing the sights, awesome. my wife and i have always hoped to be able to land a job that required moving there, at least for a while, but that's a tougher sell with kids.

anyway, she lived in paris for a year. i spent three months in germany (krefeld, dusseldorf, berlin), four months in london, about a month in stavanger, norway, a few weeks in belgium and also traveled to paris, amsterdam, oslo, reykjavik, copenhagen and other places i can't think of at the moment.

here's the deal - two weeks will go by fucking fast. you need to REALLY consider how much time (and money) you're comfortable spending traveling around and how much want to be able to actually see and do.

to me, a week in paris and a week in london is the minimum, but again, it depends what you're into. both have so much history, amazing museums, shows, restaurants, clubs, i mean seriously, i don't even know where to begin. but i'll try...

london:
- hyde park
- portobello road
- camden
- dickens museum (there's a great reenactment/reading performance)
- design museum
- the V&A
- tower of london/tower bridge/st. katherine's dock
- changing of the guard (if you must)
- operating theater museum
- YOU need to go to greenwich and the national maritime museum (may as well be a tourist and do the "i'm in the east! i'm in the west" dance over the prime meridian line while you're there)
- royal shakespeare company (highly recommend trying to catch a performance)
- take a day tip to brighton, dover, hampton court, or bath

paris... i was only there for week, and drank a lot while i was, but i really enjoyed:
- sacre coeur
- dali museum (right around the corner)
- the catacombs
- notre dame is beautiful
- louvre (amazing but exhausting)
- musee d'orsay
- jardin du luxembourg
- pierre-lachaise cemetery

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

thanks Duane. This is only the start of our travelling. My wife has been in school for the last 6 years and will be finished after next year. Before she was in school we travelled together a lot and I have sailed half way around the world on my own.

Dave did a trip like we want to do with his ex last year. Dave, where the hell are you?
