The Current Flood In The Midwest

Check this shit out. This is Clarksville, MO. I own a home with my in-laws there. I was up there Saturday.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25180311/

I rode a wave runner in to our front deck with my brother-in-law. We move furniture from the first floor to the second.

In fact, here an online photo album that we took for insurance.

http://picasaweb.google.com/ChrisReed1975/FloodPicsJune2008

The fridge is at the top of the stairs to avoid water.

We officially have water in the living space as of last night. When we left saturday, the highway we take was shut down because it was under water. We made it by 30 minutes.

Oh shit, I almost forgot. The home I live in is being worked on today because out foundation is caving in. If I ever give you real estate advice just tell me to shut it.

All in all we are very lucky. It isn't a full time home. It will be for my in-laws one day. There are some peeps who are down and out but this community is amazing. EVERYONE bands together. I seriously have never seen white and black people get along so well. They are all river folks. They love beer, boats and fishing. They will make it. I know it.

Your advice is always appreciated. This is something you can't control. A whole lot of circumstances have to be just perfect for this to happen like it has. It's devastating, but not impossible. Like you said, if people are acting like adults then things will be ok at least on the NON- mother nature side of things. Keep us posted and are prayers are with you and every single person in those areas. I imagine its very hard to deal with.

Each aspect of the soul has it's own part to play, but the ideal is harmonious agreement with reason and control.

Thanks Dudes. We have had a drought for the past 3 years. Then this past winter we had record rain and snow. Same with Iowa and MN (parts of them at least). Since the ground was so dry, we had additional run off.

The shitty thing is that when a levee breaks in Iowa, that is good news for me and the Missouri Peeps.

I'm going to document the foundation work at my house as well. The big dig started and Chez R83 this morning. Good dudes too. Really nice and they are helping me landscape other parts of my yard. Just amazing. God, I love the Midwest.

Chris, bet flood insurance is just prohibitive out there huh? That sucks. Only industry in the world that wants you to pay to NOT use their services and will refuse your patronage if there's a chance you will use their services.

Hope all goes well for you man.

Sounds like a good bunch of folks, reading that I wished I was around to fill some sandbags, I'm a pro. You can beat down people like that, but you can never beat them. Hope shit works out as well as it can.

Yes we have the flood insurance. They of course tried to weasel a bit but my father-in-law aka Catfish got them to recognize. We are all good. Just a pain in the butt. We are lucky it isn't our full time crib.

Mrs. CR83 and Her Mother are up in Clarksville, MO right now. They made Sloppy Joes for 100 last night. They are sandbagging as well today. Catfish rocked it yesterday and hauled sand in his pick up truck.

There is some good news for Clarksville though:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/06/18/midwest.flooding/in...

The bad part is that others have to suffer in order to make it better for our little get-away town.

More to come.

By the way, the Mayor of this town is awesome. Being Mayor is a non-paying position. She gets nothing financially out of her job and she is breaking her back to keep things going. Great lady.

Well, I think it helps that this is our "vacation" home. Not a full timer and cost less then half as much. It is larger then my full time joint but what can you do you know? It's the river and sometimes I think it just likes to remind us who's boss. We also know that it floods every year. This is an extreme flood but you just have to live with it then roll up your sleeves for clean up.

My MOther-in-law was on the news. I'm trying to locate the clip. Will post if possible.

Mrs. CR83 is sore from tossing sand bags all day. She's a trooper

Today's update. 500,000 plus sandbags for a town of 490 people. Totally crazy. Where this reporter is standing is about 100 yards from where the river normally is. The actual lock and dam is under water there. It is really crazy.

Some "good" news. The water may not get up to the doorknobs in our place:
