The Melvins

Going to see them in a few weeks. Never seen em, so I'm excited. I think they came around here not too long ago, but I forgot about it and missed out.

Not sure if they're a Thorp-approved band, but does anyone like em? I bought their new album, Nude with Boots, and it's pretty good. They've put out a ton of shit, and I don't think I've even heard half of it.

i feel like their sound can vary wildly.
is that accurate?

some stuff i've heard of theirs is REAL low and heavy (and i dig), but other things i couldn't stand.

They're a weird band. I love their heavy, sludgy stuff. Some of their newer songs are much more accessible than some other stuff I've heard.

The first album of theirs I ever bought was Stoner Witch and I thought it was OK, but thought they fucked around too much and should just get to the point and play the song. One song started with like 3 minutes of static and then bust out to the catchiest song on the album. So, they make you work for it, but I didn't really get it then. Not that I completely get it now either, but I can stand their little quirks. I've only heard Gluey Porch Treatments, Bullhead, Houdini, Stoner Witch, (A) Senile Animal and the new one. Ive heard a few songs from other ones, and have been wanting to get more albums. Just haven't felt like shelling out the dough.

I don't own any of their stuff, but I remember seeing them once. I can't remember who they opened for.

and Honus... since you seem to be a big fan, do you own/like Prick? Years ago I had read that it's way the fuck out there, but had never heard it. I listened to some samples of it on Amazon and I can tell it's not for me.

yup... the top vinyl are "The Trilogy" its a 3 lp set of 'The Crybaby', 'The Maggot' & 'The Bootlicker'. The opposite side of each of those lps has the oposit symbol on it. Like the Swaztika has the star of david on the other side, the pentagram has a cross on it and the KKK cross has the black panther logo.

I know I had PRICK. I think I still have the CD. I love that its not really a Melvins record because it came out while they were signed to a major lable (I think?). The name on the record and everything says SNIVLEM so that it was suposed to be a different band.

I read that they presented Prick to Atlantic and they refused to put it out... understandably. It really has no commercial value whatsoever. One "song" is just the sounds of a subway station recorded from a tape recorder that was in some dude's pocket. Im guessing they presented it to Atlantic as a symbolic middle finger... which is cool, but I don't want to listen to that shit. So, yeah... they put it out on Amphetamine Reptile records as SNIVLEM which is pretty cool.

Since Ive been on a Melvins kick lately, I went to the record store to pick up something else of theirs. Apparently a bunch of their albums are out of print so I picked up an album I had never heard of, "Colossus of Destiny", and as I was cashing out I told the cashier that I hoped it wasn't too weird. Well, it's pretty much just noise. One long ass track of weird noises, samples and other weird shit. I sat through it all (I think), but it's hard to tell when it begins/ends because it's one track.

guess I didn't make it through the entire album afterall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_of_Destiny

Colossus of Destiny is a live album by Melvins, which was released in 2001 through Ipecac Recordings. It was recorded live Friday, December 13, 1998 at Club Mangler, Cupertino, California. This is an hour of synthesizer and sample experimentation ending in a performance of the song "Eye Flys". It was reported that members of the audience were lying on the ground, covering their ears during this performance.[1] The album was originally intended to be the third part of the band's 1999 album trilogy (The Maggot, The Bootlicker and The Crybaby) until the band came up with the guest star idea on The Crybaby.[2]

The name of the album is taken from the John Fante book The Road to Los Angeles, in which the main character, Arturo Bandini, writes a book bearing the name Colossus of Destiny.

Track listing
Untitled – 59:23
Untitled – 0:05

That's funny that the audience was covering their ears. haha

I think they do this sort of shit to make themselves laugh. It kinda reminds me of the stuff Andy Kaufman pulled. Well, the stuff he did that was in "Man on the Moon", cuz that's the only way I really know anything about him. They pull gags on people for their own amusement, and it's funny unless you're the one on the receiving end of the gag.

I remember years back stories that The Melvins were looking for the sub harmonic sounds that suposidly make people vomit or shit themselves. they Definitly get off on doing things that make people go 'What the fuck!?'.

If you want to check out "real songs" you should go back further and look for stuff before the ipecac records.
