OTBT: Official Thorpster beer thread

It doesn't seem fair to not have a dedicated beer thread of eventual epic proportions on a board as fine as this

Let it begin...good beers you've had recently, good places to drink, brewery tours, brewpubs and their food...anything and everything beer related.

--------------------------------------

A gift to anyone curious where to imbibe when in the Chicago area can check my ongoing work of art here, which is a google map of any establishment thats down for the cause:

Chicago beer friendly locations

Picked up a couple variety packs last night I haven't had a chance to dig into yet. A 12 variety pack from Southern Tier and a variety 4 pack from Flying Dog as well as some Anchor Barleywines and a Samual Smith Winter Warmer.

Only had the Southern Tier IPA so far which was pretty solid but a bit too creamy. I prefer my IPA's to make me feel like I'm licking pine needles.

and to crash my own post...tonight I'm heading to the Bavarian Lodge which is an amazing German restaurant in the SW burbs that has an elaborate selection of craft beer.

Bavarian Lodge

They just tapped Surly Darkness, a rare small batch Imperial Stout...want to make sure I don't miss it.

I would love to try all the fancy, expensive types of craft beers, however, my budget doesn't allow it. Shit I consider it a splurge to get some Guinness now and then. One day.

I like Youngs Double Chocolate Stout but it's almost 4 dollars a pint bottle. I can't stand the cans with the nitogen cartridge inside. Every beer I have had with the cartridge makes it taste different. My favorite is the Shiner Bohemiem Black Lager. It taste the same as the Samuel Adams Black and is cheeper.

That and Shiner Bock are my 2 faovrites. About the only Shiner I've tried that just didn't work for me was the Hefewiezen (sp?) Guinness is definately pretty high up there.

And of course I can't forget about my staple beer... Lone Star.

Old Burnside Ten Penny ale has been my favorite lately. Only comes in 64oz growlers, so its nice to tell my wife I'm only having one beer. Killians tastes a fuck of alot better on tap than in bottles, and my bartender has been getting barrels of that stuff like its cool lately. The pizza joint/ bar I hang out has 21 beers on tap, 92 different bottles. And the Young's double chocolate stout is usually my last dessert beer.

Honestly, I loved some IPAs in the US... strong flavor, very hoppy, usually a decent alcohol %. The IPAs in the UK suck. Flat, bland, and weak. But it turns out that a 2L of cider is the British equivalent of a 40oz, and I'm enjoying getting hammered on some carbonated apple juice for pocket change. Overall, dark beer is usually pricey over here... Murphys Stout is cheap, Guinness is more expensive than I expected. Too much watered down, skunky shit like Fosters and Heineken.

But hey, I can do a round trip flight to Dublin for 20GBP and then take a trip up to the Bushmills Distillery... that might even be cheaper than buying a bottle here. :) (And yes, I'm serious.)

Now that I think of it... bombidol, you drive or got friends who do? And you got some empty space for crashing on the floor/couch?

OK, just back from the store. Bought 4 pints of Youngs Double Chocolate Stout. I already have some other beers in the fridge from Halloween. It's on later this afternoon.
