Love those saranac black forest growlers. Nice when you only want 1 beer.

Went to the Rock Bottom near me last night for a new tapping, 'McMahanahan's Scottish Ale'...solid Scot ale at 8.2% really malty with almost no hops bite...could do some real damage with this one as you can feel some of the alcohol warming but it goes down smoooooth.

Tried leaving there with a growler of their new stout 'Gibraltar' but they said the NO2 pushed stout doesnt hang with growlers so I had to settle on Scotty...lifes rough.

VICTORY BREWING COMPANY

First off, it continues to amaze me how you people - who don't even really 'know' - factor in to my day. I'm standing in the beer distributor today, planning on picking up the usual case of Yuengling for me and Strongbow for my wife, when the thought strikes me, "I oughta pick up a local variety pack to review for the board." So here we are. (Please understand, I don't know and can't talk about beer like I can whiskey, so I apologize if my personal comments are a bit pedestrian.)

About Victory ( http://www.victorybeer.com ):
Victory Brewing Company (Victory) is an American brewery located in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1996 by Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski in an old Pepperidge Farm bakery, Victory has grown considerably and evolved well outside the traditional small market of a beer brewing restaurant. Victory's beers, especially HopDevil, Prima Pils and Storm King, have received rave reviews and allowed Victory to move outside their traditional tri-state market. Victory is currently distributed in 23 states. Another noteworthy item is the variety produced by Victory. Whereas a typical beer pub produces five or six different beers, Victory brews over 20 beers, providing a huge variety. The restaurant was completely remodeled in spring of 2008 with a new focus on smoked barbecue. A unique growler filler was installed during the renovation that allows any of 20 draft beers to be routed to the counter-pressure growler filler. This device includes a CO2 evacuation step, thereby vastly increasing the shelf life of the beer compared to direct spigot filling.

One distinguishing characteristic of Victory is the insistence on using raw whole hops. Most production breweries employ pelletized hops or extracts due to the increase in storage space and the much lower wort losses during production. Victory also brews using traditional methods where appropriate, such as using the energy intensive Decoction process for production of certain German style lager biers. Brewhouse is a highly automated, energy recovery, 50 BBL system made by Rolec in OberBayern, Germany.

The Victory Brewing Company's Sampler with Prima Pils, HopDevil, Golden Monkey and Victory Lager.

Prima Pils: A well reviewed and award winning Pilsner, this beer is hoppier than other pilsners, reminiscent of a European pilsner. Composition: Malts: 2 row German pilsner malt, Hops: German and Czech whole flowers, Alcohol by volume: 5.3%
BD doesn't love a pilsner, so I would rather not have drank this. The things i do for you...

HopDevil: An India Pale Ale at 6.7% ABV, described by the brewer as "menacingly delicious, with the powerful, aromatic punch of whole flower American hops backed up by rich, German malts." Composition: Malts: Imported, German 2 row
Hops: American whole flowers.
Apparently, BD REALLY doesn't like a very hoppy beer. I couldn't finish this, despite the promise of nearly 7% alcohol.

Victory Lager: A classic version of the Munich style Helles bier - think Masskrugs at Hirschgarden. 4.8% ABV. Composition: Malts: 2 row German malts, Hops: German whole flowers.
The Victory Lager is the shit. This might be BD's new favorite lager.

Golden Monkey: An Belgian-style ale of high alcohol content, mixed with Asian spices (9.5% ABV). Composition: Malts: 2 row German malt, Hops: European whole flowers, Yeast: imported, of Belgian origin.
BD is digging the Golden Monkey. Starts very traditional, smooth, maybe a little thick. The spice is subtle, but definitely sets it apart from the norm. THis is real good, and delivering a sold buzz.

Three and a half beers in, BD has a ttrong buzz going, and that's wat counts. i will absolutely be consuming a few more golden monkeys this senving.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

"Storm King Stout: US example of Russian Imperial Stout. Very hoppy and strong. 9.1% ABV."
