toddler and medicine help
Never had this trouble before but my 3 year old is refusing his antibiotic. We have done everything. Even got more with a different flavor. Put it in
OJ, APPLE JUICE, MILK. Refuses to the point of spazzing out. We have held him down but he still spits it out all over and makes himself throw up. The
DOC thinks we are pussies and its aggravating me. Its hard to explain but we are going nuts. Any ideas of what you do to give a child liquid meds?
Its AGMENTIN. The other antibiotic AMOXICYLLIN he has no issues with in the past.

put a scoop of ice cream in a small cup with a little bit of milk
mix it up so its like a milkshake
put in the antibiotic
tell them its a special milkshake
or
tell them that as soon as they take the med. they can have ice cream
hold the spoon of ice cream right near their mouth
so that as soon as the med. goes down you can put the ice cream in their mouth
tell them this way they wont get a chance to taste the med. since the ice cream is a "stronger" taste
either way, ice cream is the key

^^^^^Ya we used them too, but he still would make himself throw it up. Its like he associates it with being sick and then it triggers him to be sick.

is there a reason why he needs the AUGMENTIN instead of AMOXICILLIN?
i got great results, as a kid, with AMOXICILLIN.
they used to say you had to keep taking it til the prescription was gone, but in my teens i proved that wrong by not taking any more once i felt
better.
in the last 10 years, there has been around ten times i was very sick, someone gave me an AMOXICILLIN pill and i was much better the next day.

I hyped it up. My boy was excited for a ice cream and was waiting for me to come home with it. I got int eh door he said "DADDY ICE CREAM YA" When I
gave it to him he took sip with the straw and refused it. Un-freaking believable. It's like he can sense it. Like he knows we are tricking him.
When he gets up from his nap we'll try it again. This time in a bowl maybe and pore the milkshake concoction over it. Hope it works.

alright i have another one.....
chocolate milk
heavy on the chololate
give it to him with dinner or lunch or whenever
BUT for the first glass of it make only enough for like 2 or 3 gulps worth
mix the meds. in with that
tell him "ok, here's a little bit of chocolate milk. if you drink all this i'll make you a big glass of it. i just wanna make sure you are a big
enough boy to drink this much. and if you are i'll know you can have more"
also use a "crazy straw"
kids love them things
make it a game that you both watch the milk go up through the straw and laugh and make a big deal about how cool it looks and have him do it again for
you
lemme know how it goes
if this doesnt work ill continue to search through the parent archive in my brain

Gavin....I think with your advice its working. He was hyped again and when I walked in fromt eh store he was excited for the chocolate. We mixed it
with milk and he drank about half of it. He was dragging his feet a bit after slowly drinking it. Left less than half. I'm wondering if we are putting
too much effort in it though. Maybe tommorrow I try the same thing but don't hype it. Maybe my dumb ass is making too much of a spectacle of it. He
probably thinking "what is there angle?"
All joking aside thanks again for the info and so far so good. YOU RULE! With the boy down, its time to watch REPO MAN.

it's def. a fine line to walk between acting excited and hyping too much
ive walked it many times and only at this point do i know how to play it
and each kid we havta play different
what worked for one doesnt work for another ect.

Luckily I have been blessed that my son has always been a master of the "chaser method" where he pounds down a shot of his medicine and then chases it
with juice or a cookie or something. He was always sick when he was a toddler. I think you guys are awesome that you are both so cjill and patient
with the situation. My parents just yelled and held us down as kids. Eye drops were the worst. I just got lucky with a kid who is pretty much easy on
most levels.

We did that too with our son but that led us to were we are now. I didn't want to go down the road our parents did with spanking/yelling/and just
plain scaring the crap out of him. I hated it as a kid and my parents were not the nicest people when it came to that. I got many a smacks in the face
from the moms. Freaking crazy now that I think about it. I guess that why I'm so worried about finding some other route to give his medicine.
