Most Recognizable Guitar Riff?

I was thinking about this and the most recognizable riffs I can think of are either "Smoke on the Water" or "Start Me Up" by the Stones.

I'm thinking along the lines of the general public. What riff would they hear and be able to recognize the song.

Thoughts?

Reign in blood and south of heaven don't for for most people. Hell, I wouldn't even know them. Yeah, I know...

I think Iron Man would probably be it. Smoke on the water alot of people seem to know the riff but not the song / who it's from or just think it's that "beavis & Buthead" song.

I could see something from AC/DC on that list.

new sensation - INXS.

that riff is pounded into your head in that song. Like a really leaky faucet that has a pulse.

PAPA DON'T TAKE NO MESS - James Brown. Love that song, love the riff and it is sampled out the ass by musicians. It never changes. Constant throughout the song. Its beating you in the head and all you can do is nod to the rhythm.

That being said THE PAYBACK by James Brown. That riff is monster as well.

UNKNOWN LEGEND - Neil Young.

One of the greatest releases in history. Love this record. This song has a fucking simple, but direct riff. Melody.

I know I am way off topic, but this THREAD is kick ass. Some of those songs may not be the SMOKE ON THE WATER, but great none the less with killer riffs.

so when you say general public, i take it you mean everyone, and not necessarily dudes that listen to mostly metal and hardcore punk right?
cus I'm pretty sure there is at least a Beatles song or something from the 60s that whould surpass Slayer as most recognized. Not saying that South of Heaven or Raining Blood wouldn't pop in my head for the metal end of it, but you know....

Possibly The Stones, Satisfaction?
I'm sure there's plenty out there that are instantly recognizable to a huge chunk of the population, but I'd be willing to guess that almost nothing from "top 40" radio stuff from the last ten years would make the list.

There's actually quite a bit of stuff in this thread that I'm sure I wouldn't recognize even if you played the whole song for me.

I've got it! Wild thing! Whoever the fuck does that song. I bet most of the public would know that song title from the main riff.
