The way it ended theres always the possibility there could be more but I think they would be doing a disservice by continuing after that.

If I had to guess, Showtime wanted to give it these last 8 episodes to wrap things up as the show deserved it. But now they're going to move onto actual profitable ventures. It's a shame but it could have been worse.

they certainly could, but that was pretty well wrapped up.
the way they did it was really good, too - cutting from Tommy's last scene back to scenes of all the other individual story lines.

(sorry, i'm trying to be vague for those that haven't seen it yet.)
