For those interested
I have checked into my new ship. The USS NASSAU LHA-4. She is the one who responded to Galveston, TX after Ike blew through. I am digging it so far,
big change from past duty served. I will keep you guys and gals posted from time to time on the inner workings of the Amphibeous fleet as I see it.

what kid of ship is that, voodoo?
i see it has a deck like an aircraft carrier, but looks far too short to actually lad a plane on.
helicopters?
so how does this work?
do you work on the boat while at port for a while?
or do you turn up, get on board and set sail?
i'll assume you can't talk about where you'll be, but do you know how long you'll be at sea?

It's an amphibeous ship Big D. it's primary mission is to carry a Marine Corps battalion to any place in the world and tactically insert them as one
force while remaining offshore to sustain any operations they may be called upon to do. It's primary aircraft is various types of Helos and the Marine
AV 8B Harriers. Right now the ship is in the shipyards going through routine maintenance. I do work on the ship in port as well as getting underway
with her. Once we are done with the fixing portion we will begin the cycle of assessments to make sure the ship is ready to rock and roll. Sea trials
and work ups as we call them. That calls for all kinds of ins and outs as it goes. A week here two weeks there. Whatever is required to get her battle
certified for the year. Once this is done we do have a mission already pre set in our future and I am EXCITED for it!!!!! I will let all know what it
is once it does not degrade operational security to do so.

Good luck with workups man. That shit was brutal for my ship because of Katrina, condensed our entire cycle. We had about 6 months to do a years
worth of assessments.

so does the work you're doing now happen around the clock?
and do you live on the ship during this maintenance and assessment period, or can you still go home after a shift?

Unfortunately we are in the same predicament. Our upkeep period was extended and as a result so was the schedule. We will now be doing the same kind
of condensed assessment cycle you experienced. Oh well, Surge is the Navy way now right? It's all good.

Yes the maintenance portion is around the clock but if I am not out to sea or do not have duty (a 24 hour period of security and fire watch) It is a
regular work day. The thing about the military is you are actually on 24-7 365 days a year. We have liberty which is the permission to take time off.
To a civilian this would be the time you spend between shifts which to you is your time. I have to have permission to take this time. It works alot
like civilians for the most part but there is a huge cultural difference obviously. I could go on forever about this. I have been in it for just under
a decade and it still fascinates me the way it all works.

Ah yes, Surge. Half the time, twice the work. You definitely get proficient fast running a tight cycle so it has its perks. As soon as Engineering
wrapped up it certs I got sent cranking and Supply started its cycle. I will never forget the Filipino CSC yelling at us to clean with "Hot soupy
water"
