The Dark Lord returns.
Saturday April 25th 2009....known in certain circles as Dark Lord Day.
The ONE day a year that Three Floyds Brewery (NW Indiana, just SW of Chicago proper) makes their Russian Imperial Stout available to the public. It's
only available this one day because it sells out the same day as it's ranked one of the top beers in the entire world and people from all over this
mudball drive/fly in to get some. Due to the chaos of sales in the past few years they decided to go with a golden ticket system, you purchase 2
tickets (proceeds to charity) that garauntee you a chance to purchase a set amount of bottles. Also an effort to curb people buying excessive amounts
to hoarde (these bottles routinely sell on eBay for upwards of $50, yes...for one bottle...its that rare.)
As of 15 minutes ago, I am the proud owner of 2 golden tickets!
Just to fully imagine the scope, here's the line from last year........at 9AM. People start showing up at 3AM.

so anyone can buy the tix, right?
and that just means they'll save a set number of bottles for you to buy?
how many per ticket?
will be people be able to buy the beer w/o a ticket?
why wouldn't people buy the ticket in advance?
maybe i'm missing something, but 'golden ticket' ala willy wonka makes it sound like it should be hard to get the ticket.
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

yes, only pre-req was that you registered with their site ahead of time. though you can still do that today even though it seems like an un-needed
step once sales have begun.

they haven't announced the amount yet, its dependant on how much this years batch yeilds, I'd expect it to be announced soon. I would think they
figure in what sold last year and increase the batch slightly. previously it's been 6 bottles per person but people were gaming the system somehow and
getting extra bottles and lots of people who flew in from all over wasted a trip only to have lots of bottles show up on ebay the next day. this is
the first year they've done the tickets in an attempt to try and organize the chaos.
theres going to be an 8hr window for golden ticket holders to pick up their beer...if that window closes and theres leftovers, people without tickets
will be able to purchase. I expect they'll see how it goes this way and maybe tweak it again next year if theres issues.

wow...just got this email , 2000 tickets sold ina couple hours, almost gone....
For those of you just now getting around to checking your
email - you need to get over to DarkLordDay.com quickly as
the Golden Tickets are well on their way to selling out.
http://www.darklordday.com/
The response has been absolutely overwhelming - we can't
believe how quick the tickets are going. We've already had
almost two thousand people purchase tickets from the site
and we're rapidly approaching a total sell out.
We only opened the shopping cart just a few short hours ago
and already we've nearly reached the point where we're going
to have to close down the sales page.
If you haven't yet secured your Golden Tickets then we
highly recommend that you do your best to do so very soon.
The Golden Tickets will only be available for a short time
longer.
If you've already purchased your Golden Tickets then
congrats on your pick-up and we look forward to seeing you
on April 25th at Dark Lord Day 2009.
For those of you who haven't yet purchased tickets, you're
running out of time to do so. If you don't end up being
able to lock down Golden Tickets we still would love to see
you at Dark Lord Day 2009 and you'll still have plenty of
access to other great bottled and guest beers.
Plus you'll be able to drink plenty of Dark Lord by the
glass.
We're doing our best to keep up with this flood of ticket
purchases and we'll update you again soon.
Thanks so much for all your interest and support of Three
Floyds and Dark Lord Day 2009!

this is awesome.
so what did the tickets cost?
i assume you have to be present to pick up the booze, huh?
i'm totally intrigued now.
if i buy a ticket next year and pay for the booze, will you go cash it in for me?
you can keep half.
i don't go for that ebay scalping shit.

They were $10 each.
I'm not entirely sure how that goes with picking it up for someone else....though as long as someone else paid for the tickets, it technically falls
within their rules about so many per household etc so I don't see why it would be an issue. Though I may get some glares walking out of there with all
that liquid gold lol.
When it comes up again next year I'll drop a post...though this golden ticket method could be a bust and they could try something new. I'll let ya
know when the announce it again.
Should be a good time even for those w/o tickets who actually show up at it because several other brewers will be there with special brews for the
event and theres a a collaborative brew between 3 Floyds and Dogfishhead called Popskull thats supposed to be their play on a German Brown. Add to
that, tons of food and BBQ and bands all day (bar/stoner rock stuff, Pelican being one) you're basically looking at a carnival for drunks. making it
the one day of the year living in NW Indiana wouldn't suck.

I'm preparing mine as we speak.
I'm lucky to have quite a few brewery/brewpubs nearby. 3 Floyds, Two Brothers, Flossmoor Station and Goose Island (locally distributed breweries w/ a
brewpub attached), Lunar Brewing Co. (a bar that brews their own) along with chains like Gordon Biersch and Rock Bottom who brew on premises and one
thing remains constant between them all.
Excessive beardage.
