How much would you tip for this tattoo?

I'm getting a piece done for free by an apprentice tomorrow and I'm not sure what I should tip him. I'm getting this dagger done, without the band name on top.

Maybe set yourself up with an hourly rate and see how long it take him to complete

I like that idea... $10-$15 an hour.... or maybe it it only takes an hour $30? I think it would really depend on how well he does.

I always tip 20- 30% of what the tattoo costs but I've never had one done for free.. :( I don't know ANY of the right people and I'm not hot enough anymore to get them free just by being cute. :P

I would wait and see how well the tatoo comes out and how happy you are with the experience and if it goes well and you're really psyched then maybe $40-$50 because its free. I guess it depends how big it is and how much it would cost if it wasnt free. I would go $10-$20 higher than you would have tipped if you were paying for the tattoo.

This guy listed his services on Facebook. He's looking for people to work on and has done some good work from what I've seen. Plus he's supervised by the owner so nothing can go wrong. If he's willing, I'll let him do as many as he wants for free.

I had a particular size in mind, but I think honus is right $20 more than if you were paying him.

I think it's awesome that you are considerate enough to be worried about this though.

I figure if the guy is going to do it for free, the least I can do is tip him.

design looks basic enough to be a jailhouse tat, no shading(or very little), he's doing it free....20$ max. But since its not a friend, you could go with Mr. Pink's advice.

Definitely base it on how good he does. The whole point of an apprentice giving out free tattoos is to get a learning experience and handing over a wad of cash for a shit job isn't gonna teach him anything. I'm sure it would be appreciated if you gave him enough to cover supplies, but tips are at the customer's discretion. Of course, if he's doing good work and you wanna get more freebies off of him, then obviously a better tip is in line.

Obviously it has to look good. What I've seen from him so far is good, and I chose a rather simple design because he's still learning. If it turns out well and he's willing to do more, I'll let him practice on me. It's the only way I'll get any new ink.

Mr. Pinks advice..........good one bro. For real though, I would say wait for the product and then decide based on what you have paid in the past Mike.
