will someone please explain to me why there was no third baseman at third when dude stole two bases? i don't know the first thing about baseball.

They shifted the infield, so it would be stacked on the right side since Teixeira was batting left. The 3rd basemen was actually covering second, with the SS and 2nd playing the infield deep between 1st and 2nd.

so shouldn't the responsibility have fallen to the pitcher (assuming he's closest at that point) to cover third?

I don't think the Phillies can pull off 2 wins at Yankee stadium, maybe go 4-3, but winning the series seems like a real long shot.
