Netflix is gonna piss off alot of people and lose a chunk of business...

They entered a deal with Warner Bros (and plan to with some other major movie studios) to not release movies for rent thru Netflix until they have
been out on DVD for 28 days in exchange for a discounted price of purchase for the movies.

well, I just signed up so I could Stream....but the movies either suck, are old, or I can get onDemand.
Netflix is overrated.

I had Netflix a couple of years ago and loved it, but found that I was obsessing about wathing the movies ASAP so I could send them back and get
another one and I canceled it.
I resigned up the begining of last year and found that I wasnt watching the movies! I actually just canceled it last week. I figure that if I really
want to rent a movie I can goto a 'red box' and get it for $1 a day. Plus I watch stuff on TV for the most part anyway.
That whole thing is really lame though! Imagine if the Library wasnt allowed to have newspapers until the week after they came out so that more people
would buy them insted of reading at the library?
Fuck Netflix and Fuck Warner Brothers!!

This makes me think of a fear I had that I was gonna talk about on the podcast which would be the opposite of this as a "Future of gaming" segement...
The jist of the idea...
HEADLINE: "Get your new 1 month old video games!"
ARTICLE: "EA signs deal with Blockbuster Video to release games for rent thru the rental giant 1 month ahead of it being for sale in stores."
But now after seeing this Netflix crap, I wouldn't be suprised if it happens with gaming companies thru services like Gamefly and thru big rental
stores like Blockbuster.

this was definitely a risky move, but i guarantee you they didn't do the deal so they could get a discount on the discs. that is absolutely not worth
it for them. it was so the studios would grant them licenses to increase their streaming catalog. that's the future for them.

To me it doesn't matter. I am rarely in any hurry to get a movie. We watch one per week at the most. The movies we get usually aren't a new release
flick anyway.

obviously, there are some people that do want to grab new releases right away, but i'm sure Netflix has enough data on their customers to know what
percentage of disc rentals are new releases made within the first month compared to the rest of the viewing habits.
and i think they'd even go so far as to wager that losing all those customers is worth it for additional streaming content they're getting. keep in
mind netflix streaming is already available on a number of hardware devices and dozens more are being added to the list this week at CES.
unfortunately for the studios, this isn't gonna turn the tide and get everyone to start paying $20 for a new release DVD again.

I'm a member of Zip.ca which is basically the same as netflix. I get more tv shows on dvd from them than I do movies, so to me it's worth it.

i was gonna say the same thing.
streaming movies on netflix are definitely still older titles.
but the tv content has been upped considerably.

How much is Netflix? I pay $25 a month (plus tax) and I get 3 discs at a time and it an unlimited amount of discs per month.

we have the cheap one. we're not marathon movie watchers so it works fine. with that plan, we usually watch one or two a week, depending on how busy
we are. their distribution is so tight that, if we're really going for it, we can have a new disc every other day.
my old man, however, had his last netflix disc for five months. THAT'S an expensive rental!

unclear on how they work and not worth the effort & risk.
steve, check out boxee (boxee.tv) if you haven;t already. it's a media center application that aggregates all the free network content into one
application. so instead of going to youtube, comedycentral.com, hulu.com, pandora, nbc.com, etc and digging through their sites for content, it's all
listed in one place.

I had the same problem at the start, didn't take too long to get torrents figured out though  Just download the .torrent file, open it in your torrent client and choose a save location.
Only place worth getting movies from is private invite only sites though. RIAA is done going after downloaders but the MPAA is still busting balls
with MediaSentry. If you want to try some things out I can help
Unless they offer immediate streaming of new releases though it's just going to push people to torrents if they want to see new movies quickly without
going outside. More or less the movie industry just keeps stabbing itself in the foot over & over & over.

Sometimes you already have to wait at least a month for some new releases anyway. I'm not stressed. Netflix has been good for me. Plus, they've got
alot of old Akira Kurosawa movies streaming now. Which is a very very good thing.

FYI: If you use Xbox to stream movies you can share the streaming capability with 5 other people. So, if you get 6 people together to go in on it
you can pay $1.60 a month
I was using my best friends for a while and his little brother was as well.
And if this does bring about more streaming content than bring it on because I am in the same boat as most here (watch more streaming, not so much new
releases). I just posted this knowing there are alot of Netflix users on here and I am sure a good chunk of their users will be pissed.
