So explain to my why something like this is necessary or even laudatory? Seriously, why provoke certain extremist elements and at the same time alienate moderate Muslims by poking fun at aspects of our religion?

It's just more childish idiocy on top of childish idiocy. In fact, at this point, given the recent thread we just had on this subject... the OP comes off to me as an attempt to provoke me. What's up with that?

Dave, this was not an attempt to provoke you.

i would've posted it if you weren't around or involved with Jason's post.

it's relevant to a national news story.

i halfway thought you'd just ignore the post, but i'm not going to run a "DaveMoral filtration process" through any posts i make.

why provoke extremist elements?

it's called standing up to the bully.

necessary? yes, cause and effect.

laudatory? imo, yes, and funny.

why? i believe in freedom, not fear.

this is not poking fun at your religion, it's a smart-ass reaction to Comedy Central's fear.

it's making fun of being scared.

it's good to make fun of things.

nothing's exempt because when you start down the slippery slope of excluding, nothing's really funny anymore.

I'd agree w/ Murk's Bully comments here. Is this event/cartoon a kneejerk reaction? Of course it is. Not very hard to see it coming either.

If moderates aren't bothered by things like this than they shouldn't be bothered by thing's like this. That doesn't mean things should never upset them, but groups standing by this certainly couldn't hurt their image, nor their faiths image.

The fanatics are the ones that promt knee jerk reactions with the fanaticism. If the moderates want to get angry about it...one of them should show up to the revolutionrunway site operators address and let him know how they feel about him further damaging their faiths image with the South park nonsense that would have completely flown under the radar if not for him raising the stink in the first place..

The Simpsons intro was so fucking point on about this whole thing that it's NOT funny.

I like to imagine the disappointment so many people must feel when they die and find out all religions were just make believe.

How would they know, if they're dead?
Scientists across the globe have been trying to figure this out for weeks; but since its all in MY imagination, they just know.

My problem with this whole thing is that, even the drawings in the ad/poster are easily construed as mocking Muhammad rather than the extremist elements that threatened the South Park creators.

Why, then, mock Muhammad instead of say... drawing respectful cartoons of the man? As you can see from my avatar and sig, there is an Islamic art tradition of depicting Muhammad.

Editorial cartoons, for example, would be more amusing if they depicted Muhammad as turning suicide bombers back from the gates of Paradise to Hellfire rather than asking them to stop because the supply of virgins(Houries, actually) is running low.

Furthermore, there are plenty of Muslims and Muslim organizations that have condemned the threat by "RevolutionMuslim.org." Unfortunately, the never get the press coverage because it's not sensational enough to report on that. The media, across the board, has a vested interested in ignoring CAIR and ISNA and other groups that do condemn these guys. It doesn't matter if it's Fox News or CNN, neither ever report on statements by those groups unless there's some controversy that could make them look bad. Unfortunately the mainstream media more ofthen than not takes these fringe elements(revolutionmuslim.com literally consists of 5-10 guys, one of them a Jew who converted after having attended an orthodox Rabbinical school in the Occupied Territories, who mostly harass Muslims and have been ostracized from the Muslim community and kicked out of mosques) and construe them as representative of ALL Muslims. Thus condemnations have be met with the caveat that these guys are not representative and the tendancy of the media to portray them as such is problematic and furthermore that "freedom of speech" means freedom to offend without consequence from the communities offended is a farce.

Furthermore, there's a dominant narrative in the mainstream media that Muslims are the only religious group that threatens over offense... in fact, we've seen that here on this forum regarding the topic of Muhammad and South Park. I think it just speaks to what the vast majority of American Muslims were doing in regard to South Park in the first place that most Christians have done this(it could also have to do with the fact that most Christians also stroke to porn on the regular), ignore it. However, gay Jesus? Watch out... Christians have repeated threatened death and violence over the play Corpus Christi that depicts a gay Jesus. Most recently a few weeks ago. Here's a nice article from http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/26/douthat/index.html to debunk the narrative that only Muslims do this. And for good measure he's a link to the http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/29/theater/29arts-CORPUSCHRIST_BRF.html about the threats over the gay Jesus play.

It's called "Buraq," it's an angelic horse sort of creature. Kind of a Pegasus, I guess.

I'm also not so sure I'd call it a "woman's" face as it is very similar to the faces of all the angels surrouding them in the painting... which are neither male nor female, to my undestanding. Oddly, it's a Persian painting but all those faces look Chinese to me.
