Favorite scene

The question of best band has been asked, but which scene does everybody prefer.

I gotta go with NYHC. Other towns have had good hc scenes, but I gotta go with NY.

What about everybody else? NY, Boston, DC, L.A., Detroit, etc.?

NYHC has a tremendous history that will never be forgotten, but it seems like most of our scene has fallen victim to gentrification or retirement. the downtrodden youth of today can no longer afford to hang out on the corner of 7th and A. this is really quite upsetting for me.

baltimore does sound awesome these days. of course, when i lived there 10-12 years ago it wasn't so great - all we had was Next Step Up and Torn Apart. at the time dc was the shit, though; we'd be at shows three nights a week. i need to get back down to bmore for a visit.

I don't necessarily mean current. I mean overall. Over the last 25 years. Overall, what's yer favorite.

SOHC! Southern Ontario is incredible. Toronto bands are amazing these days, St Catharines & Welland are just insane. Welland local shows draw a minimum 200 people every time. Its great.

Adelaide has a hot scene too, i fucking love shows here & the bands.

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

Y'know, that's right around the same time that I lived there, Duane. I wonder if I ever ran into you at a show or somethin'. I saw Next Step Up a few times and practically lived at Reptilian. I was workin' overnight in a 7-11 and about the only time I left the house during the day was to go to a record store or somethin'. I only lived there for a year and never really got to know anybody very well, so it's possible that we crossed paths back then.

As for the topic of this thread, I've always loved the old Boston scene. For a while in High School I became a fan of the NY thing and some of those bands still hold a place in my heart, but tons of 'em bore the shit outta me now.

The old Boston scene was fucking great. SSD, F.U.'s, Jerry's Kids, Negative FX, Gang Green, Slapshot, Bruisers, the list goes on. Even today with Blood For Blood, Ramallah, Colin Of Arabia, Cheech, Death Before Dishonor, great scene in Boston.

I look at NY though and think of AF, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law, Reagan Youth, The Mob, SOIA, Madball, Sheer Terror, VOD, Neglect, Leeway, Skarhead, COT, American Standard, Warzone, Breakdown, Sworn Enemy, SFA, Life Of Agony, Biohazard, Krays, Killing Time, Underdog, Harley's War, Everybody Gets Hurt, Earth Crisis, 25 Ta Life, and about 1000 others that didn't pop into my head. Go back to the 70's and you had the Ramones, Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders, and a lot of other greats.

I'm gonna stick with what's going on now, b/c it's many different questions when you consider what bands came out of where and what plakces were like in previous time periods.

I love Boston for the bands we have now and the ridiculous amount of shows. I also am amazed at how many awesome people I have met here too. I should seriously move but it's been hard just for those two reasons. The collective "scene" however, is just ok to decent, in spite of how good we have it. Lots of kids get jaded and don't come out. People can be a little uptight. Like anywhere else, too, people get factiony and social climby.

I've been to shows all over the country. There were alot of places I liked but I can't have gotten a full picture. I think my favorite place to see shows, though, is Providence. Unless lots of kids come from other places like Boston or CT, shows are smaller and always super chill and lots of fun with no fights and the crowds are always very diverse.

Philly is the WORST music scene I've ever been involved with. They've never supported the local bands, used out of town bands as a soundtrack to beat each other too, and the promoters, from alleged pedophiles to meth heads, have beeen horrible. There have been some great bands from Philly, too, most notably The She Males back in the old days and the Bad Vibes now. We haven't played our "hometown" in almost a decade. Fuck that place. Sorry MrBad, Juan Diablo, and godabandonedme. By the way Fuck Met, Fuck the Philly Dust Crew, Chord magazine, and Too Damn Hype.

NYCHC has legends. I love just about every NYCHC band but they've all been around since at LEAST '95....
I'm not so sure about new shit from there?

Syracuse, Albany have produced some sweet bands

I'm usually down for anything NJ, and Detroit/Windsor has some great peepz n bands. Same goes for Boston.

EUROPE has most NA scenes beat even if they arent as large, I've still never seen so much dedication/heart and energy as from those bands and kids, anywhere.

-ps TEXAS has some great shit.
