RIP - Brooklyn Monster Factory

from Facebook....

On Sunday Oct 31st, The Brooklyn Monster Factory will be closing it's doors after 4 & 1/2 years of business. THANK YOU to everyone who supported the store. It is because of
you we lasted as long as we did. We will be open today, tomorrow & on Halloween. Stop in & say goodbye! * A new comic shop will be at the same location as of Weds Nov 3rd. If you have a pull list with the BMF, your books will be there on Weds*

Really sorry Mike! I hope whatever you do next works out for you.

A note from facebook:

Quote:
I will be working at the Brooklyn Monster Factory tomorrow 10/30, but it will be for the last time. As of Sunday Oct 31st, The Brooklyn Monster Factory will be closing it's doors after 4 and a half years of business. I want to say thank you to everyone and anyone who supported the store. It is because of you we lasted as long as we did. Things got rough in late 2008 when the recession started and never got all that much better for the shop.My brother Jon and I did something that many people never get to do, and for that we are thankful.

A new comic shop will be opening officially on Weds Nov 3rd, but it will not be the Brooklyn Monster Factory.

The BMF will live on in the form of conventions and Ebay for now. Again, thanks for all of the support. I will have a BMF table at the King Con in Park Slope Nov 6th and 7th at the Brooklyn Lyceum. Stop by and say hello.

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

Yeah, that is the part I don't get... If the BMF is closing for some reason, why have another comic shop go in? I know the BMF was more than just a comic shop so how would just a comic shop last?

Hey guys,
First of all, thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it.

Second, yes, a new comic store will be taking it's place, one not owned by my brother Jon and I.

What happened is - we could no longer afford to keep the store open.
Around late 2008/early 2009 things sales started going downhill and in many ways, it never really got better.
My brother Jon has been the one to float the most of his own personal money and his job situation changed and of course, his money situation changed. It was getting to a point where thousands of dollars were put in, never to be recovered and on top of it, we would lose a regular customer here and there and the weekly order payments were way more than what the store would make in a week. Comics are C.O.D. each week and can't be returned, so what you have that doesn't sell, is yours for eternity.

We wound up selling the store for X amount of money (we made zero on the sale, it is all going to back rent, taxes etc) to a customer who at one point was going to open a shop in a different part of Brooklyn, but that deal fell through and my brother and I made the decision about 2 weeks ago to sell to him and his partner. As of this Weds, a new shop "Brooklyn Comics and More" opens where BMF once stood.

BUT - The Brooklyn Monster Factory is not done.
As a matter of fact, I have a table at a convention in Brooklyn next week called The King Con.
I will be doing Ebay, comic and record conventions and sell to any comic reader on any of the boards I post on via Pay Pal.

Send me your want lists, I have THOUSANDS of books! INH722@yahoo.com

So yeah, I will be ok.
Am I sad? Of course I am, it was 4 and a half years of my life.
But I made great friends, had a lot of fun and will still be reading and selling comics.
And I am in 2 bands, I just need a REAL job haha!

The people on the Thorp board are awesome, thanks again for the kind words.

You should look into the Boston SUPER MEGA FEST. Its coming up in a few weeks, but maybe you can get a deal on an unbooked table. its one of the few conventions I go to every year. Its not actually IN Boston, its in Framingham, MA, but its a pretty big show.

Good luck Mike!!

You obviously had a blast running bmf and nearly five years of running your own shop is certainly something to be proud of. Put the headaches behind you and concentrate on the great memories! And honestly, being able to sell the business was a great opportunity.
