back up itunes question

How do I do this correctly with a mac. I'm a douche so dumb it down as much as possible. I have a western digital hard drive and I also have dvd's. What is best and when I plug the harddrive into my computers usb it does nothing. No western digital icon, nothing.

I tried one of those Western Digital external hard drives and even though it clearly said on the box and in the manual that it was compatible with my mac, it never worked and I had to return it. Personally, I think that brand is garbage. After I returned that, I got on newegg.com and ordered a Fantom Drive and it was ridiculously simple to drag over everything I wanted to store on it. Newegg seems to have the best prices on stuff like that and they're super fast with delivery.
