Gas Tax

So here's my latest rant:

"All 50 states apply a flat-rate tax on each gallon of gas sold, with an average of 21.8 cents per gallon, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

That's in addition to state sales taxes, usually between 2 percent and 6 percent, and a federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.

New York leads the nation with the highest state gasoline taxes while Alaska has the lowest, the American Petroleum Institute said.

On top of New York's state tax of 8 cents per gallon, it charges 8 percent state sales tax and a Petroleum Business Tax of 15.2 cents per gallon. There is also a spill tax of 0.3 cents per gallon and a petroleum testing fee of 0.05 cent per gallon levied on gasoline."

My understanding was that gas tax goes to support infrastructure, but I had no idea how many taxes were actually being leveed on gasoline. Numbers make my head spin, so I called my Senator.

According to the receptionist in Senator Stephen Saland's office, they're researching this issue and expcect to have a newsletter out in reference to it within a 'day or two'. She was unclear what the exact subject matter of that letter would be, but knows they are working on it. I left my name and address, so we'll see just what comes of that.

Anybody have any input on this? Are the gas taxes a necessary evil, or highway robbery?

This article talks about the gas tax and how some states are working on suspending it (excerpt above).

good, you people need to walk. Compared to Europe we are lucky. The fact is we are running out of oil, the majority of experts agree we need to other resources.

Since gas went up I have, walked and ridden my bike, shopped at local stores, and even met a few of my nieghbors.

Maybe it is time thje Fatest country in the world stop whining about gas prices and start getting back in shape.

Tax the shit out of gas

Im getting tired of the 'compared to Europe' argument. I mean technically it is correct. They pay more for gas and they always have as well as a bunch of other things.

The thing is that their public transportation system is far superior to almost anything in the US. If you dont live in Boston, NY or one of a few other major cities, good luck getting to work with out a car, unless is walking/biking distance. I live 35 miles from work and there is no way to get here on public transportation.

I would also assume that since the countries in Europe are smaller and have less of almost everything relating to the government that they pay less in income tax or whatever its equlivent would be. That IS an assumption on my part, maybe someone from Europe can confirm or deny this:

I think you both have good points but let's be realistic. People are not going to just up and start walking. It would be great but not a chance. Yes, America is Fat. Yes, we are bitches to the oil industry. Gauge what is improtant to you and go fropm there.

Do I have any stance? Yes, I workout 5 days a week and gas prices are way too high. We need other resources and it needs to be a priority. I don't really think it is a priority because of the Bush Administration's Energy plan. Why isn't it madated that cars get more fule efficient? Another part that sticks out is the Tax advantages and incentive oil companies get.

exactly, for all the increases we have seen in the recent past, consumption has not declined at all.

Yeah, public transportation in the 'burbs is lacking to say the least. When I go to NYC, I walk or take the subway. Even going to North Jersey, I often took the train, then a bus. But if you're not going to a major metropolitan area, it's not a reasonable solution. Hell, most of the rail lines here and where I used to live, lay dormant and in ill repair, or have been ripped out and are being used as biking/hiking trails. What little pt there is, is infrequent, limited in it's coverage and far from a pleasant traveling experience.

Europe developed it's pt systems. Good for them. Here in America, we didn't. We replaced rail cars with tractor trailers, and passenger cars with motorized vehicles. And, it's not my doing that oil companies control the world. They buy and destroy plans for more fuel efficient cars, and then ask me to bend over and take it quietly at the pump. Excuse me, but um, no.

stop supporting big (Oil) business
stop suburban sprawl
stop box stores
push local politicians to improve public transportation
vote and get invovled in local politcs
there are a ton of things you can do

It is pretty simple, it won't hapen because America is full of lazy apathetic people,

you are just about the ripe age to be drafted. does that bother you? do you even think about that? there was a sign at jonestown behind jim jones' dead body and it said "those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." which would you rather sacrifice your hot car or your life?

die for oil, sucker.

born on the firecracker fourth of july raised on football and mtv, never felt what its like to have to fight to stay free. Vietnam just a time life book memory. the mask is off again this time nobody cares but you can't keep dancing if your legs are blown away.

die for oil, sucker.

you too can get you face shot off so arms race tycoons won't have to get a real job. the cold war is over, it was all a mirage. we could use that money we got problems to solve, but were not allowed at the peace dividend because our psycho president has got his head in the sand. saddam hussain so egocentric, he even replaced Mickey mouse on watches with his own face. last spring he was our tyrant we thought we could use. we supplied him with all his guns and his nerve gas too. right now its the world's first tabloid war. there they are on cnn, flinging mud back and forth. if all wars were treated like game shows, great! the world would be a much happier place. but it won't last long with these egos involved. one shot at saddam he's going bomb Israel. after that hiroshima will look like a picnic and we'll all die for oil, sucker.

you too can get your spinal cord snapped to save greedy kings from the greed of iraq. give your life for a country where women can't vote and people still get their hands and heads chopped off. in saudi arabia they stone you to death for sleeping with another person's husband or wife. women can't go out alone, or show their face or even drive. and there's never elections, you can't even ask why. but they finally did outlaw slavery in 1962, so progress is being made. and they're sitting on something we can learn to live without but certain fat cat's bank accounts cannot, oil.

for this you get to be all you can be, a dead army, navy, air force, marine. come home one of those deranged unemployed vets, the kind they love to make tv cop shows about. just like tom cruise in a wheelchair. no film royalties cause nobody cares about you once you've been used to die for oil, sucker.

kill, kill, kill the poor even faster that crack, send them off to war make sure they don't come back. give them tanks that fall apart and helicopters that crash. 2000 died in panama cause the stealth can't shoot straight. 800 million dollar batman plane and it doesn't even work. no surprise when their idea of national security is screwdrivers costing 1800 bucks. a little sand in the engine can stop a naval destroyer. saddam hussain knows this but our networks don't report it as we die for oil, sucker.

and is it really worth it in this day and age to come out the winners of world war 3? think about it. once we take over that place well never ever beable to leave. bush talks about bombing a path to Baghdad 75 miles wide. and if the big bad wolf still won't give up we're going to drop the nuclear bomb and after that we'll just waltz right in to colonize their hearts and minds. but the arab people will be so damn mad we'll be lucky to get out of there alive. after that do you think any arab country will sell us oil?

think of the cost to keep our army there when the only way left to force oil out of the ground is soldiers guns treating arabs like slaves or was that all part of the plan. how long do you think that could possibly last?

they found a scam to replace the cold war it's called die for oil, sucker.

what's so sick about this is that theres is a better way. stop selling guns to arabs and to Israel. don't need to keep ourselves hostage to oil, use our star wars know how to build solar powered cars. one clerk in the patent office might be all it would take to find blueprints for a solar car general motors shelved away. but no thats to easy and theres money to be made, especially if you already have more than you'll ever need. for those of us who can't buy our way out like rich folks like dan quale do its burn you draft card, burn the flag, and burn the pentagon too.

so be all you can be and say no the air force, army, marines. get off your butt before your butt's blown off. don't die for oil, don't be a sucker.

When you convert the price of US gas & the conversion of gallons to litres, you are ONLY paying $1.04/Litre. Now since it was labour day in Canada last week it went from $1.08 to 1.17 overnight & by the end of the day was $1.34/Litre. In Australia now it is $1.40/Litre and in February it was only around a dollar even.

So I have no sympathy because you are still paying less than everyone else. And for the government to ask other nations to dip into their oil reserves to help out the states hahaha that is a fucking load of shit. Bush should dig into his own stocks and help his people. But then again he is a fucking douchebag. Hasn't anyone killed him yet? The CIA or ASIO is probably gonna hunt me down now. Fuck bush, fuck cheney fuck fuck fuck the world is so fucked.

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.
