Cash Comes to Broadway
Musical based on Man in Black's songs comes to life
Just as the life of Johnny Cash is about to hit the big screen courtesy of the Hollywood biopic Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix, comes the
announcement that Ring of Fire, a Broadway musical based on the country legend's classic songs, will premiere at New York's Ethel Barrymore Theatre
next February.
Created by Richard Maltby Jr. and William Meade, Ring of Fire will feature thirty-eight songs from Cash's five-decade career, including "Country Boy,"
"Five Feet High and Rising," "I Walk the Line" and the title song.
Meade conceived of the show six years ago, before the singer-songwriter's death from diabetes-related complications in September of 2003. "Many people
had approached Johnny, but only Bill's idea convinced him," Maltby writes in the program notes. "And after about five years, just before he died,
Johnny gave Bill the stage rights to this material." Maltby -- who was behind such Broadway hits as Ain't Misbehavin', Fosse and Miss Saigon -- will
direct the production.
While Walk the Line explicitly charts an early period of the Man in Black's career and personal life, Ring of Fire allows the songs to tell a broader
story, bringing to mind the hit Billy Joel/Twyla Tharp collaboration Movin' Out. "To me, Johnny Cash's biography wasn't the most important story
available to tell," Maltby continues. "It seemed to me that there is another story here. It's an almost mythic American tale -- of growing up in
simple, dirt-poor surroundings in the heartland of America, leaving home, traveling on wings of music, finding love, misadventure, success, faith,
redemption, and the love of a good woman -- and eventually returning home . . . I refer to this as a story, but you won't find a plot, or dramatized
scenes."
Ring of Fire is currently up for a limited run at Buffalo's Studio Arena Theatre, in upstate New York, through October 9th.

Yeah, but didnt it say that the guy received Cash's express permission to do this just before his death? That tells me he wanted this to happen, the
only way they could screw him is to deviate from whatever it was he agreed to let them show on the stage, and trust me the royalties are going
wherever John wanted them to, he wasnt stupid. The movie coming out actually looks good, and it is the American way to "Cash" in on legends if you get
the chance, is it not? It has historically been considered "important" work when this is done, so why are you all acting surprised. I ,for one, am
looking foward to the movie, and the Cash family will collect on that little ditty as well, Just look at the success of Ray, Oscars, acclaim and I
know there was at least one person besides myself on this board whom enjoyed that film.

Yeah the movie was planned WELL before his death, he wanted Joaquin for the roll and even had him over for dinner or some shit after seeing him in
gladiator.
the movie looks good except the lip sync parts.

Ray was being worked on with Mr Charles alive, he was very involved in it, as was Johnny with his movie, the dying was just bad timing. The Cash
family are all very excited for this film, and you all should be too if your fans, it's going to be awesome, and your right, the only dissapointment
is the lip syncing, but who else besides god himself has the brass balls to get as deep as the man in black.

yeah it is the american way to cash in on legends.... But I for one am VERY EXCITED about seeing "I walk the line" because I mean from teh trailer it
looks awesome as hell... me and a shit load of my friends are going to a movie theatre together the VERY night that it comes out because it is a movie
that we as fans can appreciate and sing along too and be total assholes to the ones that have no clue about the legend that is the MAN IN BLACK.....
well, Joaquin Phoenix actually looks almost just like a deasd ringer for a young Johnny.... so I am VERY stoked for the movie
as far as Ray goes I was and still am surprised and much in love with that movie. I mean Jaime Fox did such an amazing job on it and in fact sang like
75% of the songs himself and that blew me away when I found that out. Not to mention he REALLY researched his role and met with Ray and watched old
home movies of him and learned his walk, his talk and more. I mean not to mention the fact that Jaime Fox REALLY looks like Ray Charles and that alone
was fuckin uncanny
