gmail.com is google's free webmail. it was 'invitation only' during testing, there was a bit of a status associated with it.

for a brief time, it was an exclusive email address to have. i was surprised how enthusiastically it was embraced by the non-nerd community. i guess
cause google doesn't have a very strong corporate image, i dunno. oh, and the fact that it came with a gig of space for your mail was huge, too!
