That's great! It still amazes me that things like this photo can instantly put a smile on my face. A few years back I never thought I would really even like kids, let alone have one and be able to feel that kind of love.

thanks for all the kind words.
all this drama from the show in AZ has been on my mind a lot recently, and it just makes me that much more grateful to have something as important as her in my life to occupy my time.

I think I'm ready for children but the idea of 'disciplining' kids always scares me ... I seem to be in a generation (I'm 22, on the older end of the scale) of kids where there wasn't alot of discipline / mentoring / role modelling from parents so they have no clue about ethics, consequences or morals and behaviour .. thats why we see so many ... 'disfunctional' kids in society today.

I dunno if your kids are old enough to worry about yet but how do you / will you know how much 'discipline' (that doesn't mean whacking them) and boundaries to give them?

Sorry to turn the Thorp Boards into a Mothers Club but it's something I've always wanted to know.

Nah, that's a good question, and we've had plenty of parenting-specific topics on this board. ...mostly because there are so many parents here!

She's just over a year and a half now, and so far (and generally speaking) we've pretty much let our daughter do as she's pleased. We want her to be curious and to explore things on her own and learn how things work, but we're always near by in case something scares her or she starts going toward something dangerous. That way she also learns that she has the support of her parents, and that we're always there for her.

Up to this point, we've more or less avoided the word 'no'. Too many kids become desensitized to it cause it's all they ever hear. If she's going toward something dangerous, we tell her 'ouch' or 'danger'. If she's doing something we just don't want her doing (like taking all the cds off the shelf), we usually just distract her with something else fun.

But now that she's walking, she's getting into more than ever. And with two right around the corner, she's starting to assert her independence more - and she's quickly learned about 'no'! This is a weird time for kids - they're more aware of their abilities as individuals, but they're still not good at communicating, and that frustration is where the tantrums tend to come from.

we've never hit our kid, and 'time out' is BS, so at this point, she knows 'no' and 'don't do that' and she knows the more stern delivery of both, but that's it. i'm sure this will become more challenging as she gets older!

Big D, that little girl has overcome some tough ass shit, and she is one special littel gal, she will definitely be heard from again on a much larger scale I'm sure. I would love to hear so much morw about her and all the lil ones on this board, ours is going on six months and we are always curious as to others experiences.
